Ritigala is a strict nature reserve.
So you can visit only some places alowed by the forest department.
Hikers do not allowed to the top of the mountain, before you visit the place you get a special permission for that.
If you do not obay the rules in there you shoul punished by the department.
And you cant use your maps inside the forest. The map showing the nearest town for the security reasons.response / report this review -

Historically very important place. In ancient time one of a important monastery build for the monks for their meditation and livings. A big pond for use of 500 monks. Hospital with all facilities.

The ancient monastery complex is an amazing calm and serene environment. Easy trekking even for weak people. It's a very good example for advanced architecture and other engineering practices of the ancient era.

Jungle hiking with no one else there. The ruins aren't spectacular, but it's a great spot away with no crowds.

A beautiful and interesting trail. 40 mins return for half the distance (stopping at the waterfall). Apparently 2 hours return for the whole walk if you don't get lost!

want enjoy forest life..must go to "Ritigala"
it's a beautiful mountain forest.
Last year when I went there there was no charges for the entrance. But, I heard now they claim 20/= for the locals.

Ritigala is a place contains lot of ruins belongs to kings era. Hence this is a Strict Natural Reserve. Therefore, when you go there please do not harm the environment coz officers can arrest you. You have to come to entrance via a muddy road. Mostly heavily rain there. you can watch ruins of Building and tanks. Some says this was a forward operation base of King Rawana. Some says this place was used by King Dutugamunu for train his forces. Anyway this is highly valuable Historic Site. you are not allowed to go up to mountain. it is prohibited.

The visit is amazing. It is a pity that you can't reach the top because it's a strict forest reserve. You can only climb up to a quarter. There is a very good local guide in the house beside the entrance road (Daya), he is a nice person.

ritigala is a small rock mountain .it's full of ancient ruins. good litte hike on ancient road. someone like or study history , will falling love with this place.

Ritigala is the highest mountain in this area .. if you use public transport there have no public transport from main road to the entrance.. that distance from main road about 8 km..
