This is the main railway station where rail road coming from Colombo divide into two; towards Kurunegala, Anuradhapura, Trinco, Jafna and towards Kandy, Badulla. Almost all trains stop here. Also many trains starts from here usually to Colombo and Maho. Most of them starts in the morning. It will take less than one half hour to Colombo on Express train and more than two hour on slow train. But usual delays can occur.
Two canteen where food, sweets and drinks are served in fair price can be found. And a book shop with news papers and sweets is located too

One of the leading railway station in Sri Lanka railways. From this point northern line and upcountry line is separate from each other. Northern line will also divided at Mahawa Junction when one line goes to Jaffna( Yapanaya) and other to Batticaloa ( Madakalapuwa).

Kind of a busy station since many passengers change their trains in here. According to the Sri Lankan standards this is a large station with 3-4 platforms. Better to use flyover if you’re wheeled through this point because many trains pass through this place and cause traffic congestion.

If you are someone from kegalle, during rush days you can get a train from colombo to polgahawela and get a bus to kegalle. Sometimes its very hard to get a bus during evening hours. This station is not much clean.

It's a bit long station and one of the old station . Not bad at all. Most of the trains stop here so one of the major station in sri lanka. Recently constructs fly over to avoid traffic jam because of the train service . Double track line ends here from Fort station. This is the 2nd Junction from Colombo fort station, where once line connect upcountry and other line North east line.

Polgahawela's railway station is at the centre of the town and lies at the main junction that joins two railway lines; one coming from the upcountry of Sri Lanka and another from the northern part of the country.The Main Line connects with Kandy, Matale, Nawalapitiya and Badulla..The Northern Line connects with Anuradhapura, Jaffna, and Kankesanturai, and leads to all other lines in the North.

Polgahawela Railway station is one of a main Railway stations in Sri Lanka. Except very few intercity trains, almost all the trains stop here. This is a railway junction. The northern Railway line which leads to Jaffna starting from here.

The ticket counters are placed only at the main entrance. As it has only 2 ticket counters large queues can be occur in rush hours. So better to go there bit early, not waiting until the last moment if not you might miss the train. Train time tables are published at the entrance and they are very helpful. Parcel taking counter is beside the main entrance. The railway station has 2 canteens. One in the 1st floor and other one is in the ground floor between 4th and 5th platforms. People can get foods and drinks at a reasonable price from there. The Security office is situated at the ground floor in between 2nd and 3rd platforms. Separate restrooms and toilets for both gents and ladies are available here but the conditions of them are very poor the toilets are the worst. The staff is kind and helpful, can get help or information if needed.

At the Railway station there are 2 ATMs from People’s Bank and Commercial Bank, It is very useful for the passengers. There is a Sathosa Supermarket nearby if you want to buy anything.
