Actually this is not the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage. This is the bus halt to the Rambukkana side from Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage. Some reviews here with mistaken that this is the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage. Hope this misunderstanding with the name as it starts with Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage . bus stop. Nothing especial, bus stop with a small shelter with iron sheets and no seating inside.

Numerous elephants. Elephant feeding (waste), elephant rides (costly) r other attractions. Children will enjoy. Entrance for foreigners is very high.

This is an average spot that comes close to being labeled as a tourist trap. The large amount of advertising this place gets seems to be pushing tourists to this place. However, don't expect too much. Elephants aren't the kind that like being kept chained or kept captive. The upkeep isn't great either. The place looks like one run to gain from tourists' fascination for elephants.
On the plus side, the restaurant beside the river didn't disappoint.response / report this review -

The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage was established by the Sri Lankan Department of Wildlife Conservation in 1975 for feeding and providing care and sanctuary to orphaned baby elephants that were found in the wild. The orphanage was located at the Wilpattu national park, then shifted to the tourist complex at Bentota  and then to the Dehiwala zoo From the Zoo it was shifted to Pinnawala village on a 25-acre (10 ha) cocunot plantation adjacent to the Maha oya  River.
The primary residential care area is on the east side of Highway B199, Rambukkana Road.response / report this review -

No guide or info on the tours as to where elephants come from and where they will be released , do not advise to partake in the "washing" of the elephants as these ones are chained up and forced to lie down.

There is a daily schedule to follow, you can see them feed elephants in the morning and bath in the noon

This is one place where u can see such a huge number of elephants..
They are taking care of orphaned and injured elephants which got separated from the heard during the civil war.
There is facility to Feed the elephants.
It's a magnificent sight to see such a large heard of elephants being taken to the river like a cattle heard..

Although you see lot of bad comments , this place is specialy for the disable elephants and elephants which faced to different kind of problems.it is not a captive center or training center .it needs lot of money to maintain elephants specialy for foods.that is why they sell tickets.it is good place to study about elephants.

If u love elephants,go to the national parks just don't come to this place! they treat the elephants so rude ! They just use them for money ! Poor elephants

Do not go to this place. You can see elephants, yes, but with chains and the people working with them are very rude. If you only go Pinnawela perhaps you dont realized it, but if you visit other places where seeing elephants (yala, Minneriya, etc) you see the difference. They are not an orphanat anymore, they keep elephants to earn money, and you can see that on animal faces.
