Pawrukanda Raja Maha Viharaya (Ancient Buddhist Temple)

This temple situated at Halwala near the Lewwanduwa – Avittawa road about 10Km from Lewwanduwa junction. You can see a sign board called Pawrukanda at Uda Galathara junction. The you should turn and go about 300m from Uda Gallathara to Halwala road up to Halwala CWW Kannangara School.

There are another 3 ways to this ancient temple. One is Southern Expressway up to Welipenna Entrance and Lewwanduwa – Avittawa road by a vehicle. Second one is Elpitiya-Avittawa-Aluthgama road and by a vehicle. Last one is the most beautiful way through Benthara River by a boat from Benthara Bridge up to Galathara Junction about 20 - 25km and 1Km up to Halwala CWW Kannangara School by a vehicle.

You can see the ancient Buddhist heritage at this secret temple and a rock fortress. And you can see the horizon up to the Southern coastal ares ,Benthara River, Southern Express Way, ancient frescoes, statues, a fond and many things because this is the lase mountain of the southern of the Kaluthra District. You con use this place visit as a pilgrimage as well as a adventure picnic because this place consist of Buddhist heritage and large scale of rain forest around the mountain range .

"King Manabharana who got defeated in the fight with Wikramabhahu fled to Pasyodunrata with his brothers Kithsirimegha and Sri Wallabha. And got protection there. It is said fortress Manabharana was also at this place. This is a natural fortress and its summit is surrounded with a stone Wall. As such it is called Paurukanda. Recently footprint of Lord Buddha had been hewn at the summit of the hill. An it is called Piunchi Sripada. In the summit there is a cave, where about 400 can stay at the same time. It is believed that king Manabharana lived here. Out of the archeological remains the stone canoe occupies an impotent in this place".
