One would need atleast 2 hours to take a look at this museum. There are not many things to explain their country's history which was what I was looking for.. but overall it was good

Good place to visit in Colombo if you like history and culture. The museum showcases the history of Sri Lanka. There is a Laksala shop where you can by souvenir and there are other stuff also. Cloths seems to be responsibly priced.

Very impressive. Excellent collection and collection is way above average for a museum in a developing nation. Professionally kept. My only concern is the absence of air conditioning, not just for the visitor’s comfort but for the preservation of artifacts. The natural history part do got “some” air but not fully. The Blue Whale skeleton is amazing and that alone is worth the visit.

About the admission: You need TWO tickets, one for the museum and one for the Natural History section. Unless you just want to see one, make sure to buy a combine ticket as it is cheaper than buying two separate tickets. They don't make it clear there.

This is the national museum of the country. The building it self is grand. But interiors look oldish and dark.Priceless piece of art lies in a gloomy hall without air conditioning or temperature and humidity control.
The best thing is you get the chance to see true items,the worst thing is very poor setup,with too many displays in one place.They could do better.Change items on display leaving more space for visitors time to time,like many museums do.
I love the collection but it need improvement,like cafe,toilets and lighting.

When i visit to this place, this was my first time. I face a difficulties because my wife is having disabilities of walking. first there is no one to guide me and i did not know where i can buy tickets. At the main entrance on road there is no information about any of this. I had herd time to walk and wait for much time to get inside.
Other than this there are good comparative people who guide in side. Some of the guide, they don't have good knowledge about the historic.
Looking in side the all museum, a person with disabilities of walking had difficulties to get upstairs.
The place is beautiful and the its very historic for students who do researches.
My family loved to visit this place. I do recommend to any one who interest in history to visit and explore this beautiful place.

Interesting place. Very generous museum, they just leave the few hundred years old statue for you to have near observation. Overall is awesome. But need to take note that the museum is abit hot inside especially when crowded. Best to prepare mini fan then you can enjoy fully.

It is Great and only one national Museum in Srilanka. There can be seen many of antiquities and other things here. Those things are Prehistoric things, Pro-history things and etc. However if you visit here we can get good knowledge about all of this era. Because of the AC and BC in many of imitate you and take you touch and finding things have been displayed here. It is a great Museum as I think.

The museum is pretty huge. At the gate there is a side room where art classes are conducted. Walk down the pathway to the main building where you get four big rooms of exhibits, two on the ground floor with mostly ancient relics and two upstairs that focus on ancient paintings and traditional textiles. The entrance ticket for Local Adult is Rs.60 and Rs.30 for Kids, to visit only the Main Museum. [Rs.100 and Rs.50 for Local Adults and Kids if they're visiting both Main Museum and Natural History Museum] The entrance ticket for Foreigner Adult is Rs.1000 and Rs.500 for Kids to visit only the Main Museum. [Rs.1200 and Rs.600 for Foreign Adults and Kids if they're visiting both Main Museum and Natural History Museum]

Quite expensive, as always for tourists. Anyway, I enjoyed quite a lot of the things there (not all though). Some people were just rudly loud. If you are interested in museums and everything that comes along with it, you should give it a try. The facade, however, is only nice on the outer walls (the ones you can see when passing by).

Great display of Sri Lanka's history. From Religion, Arts, Human evolution, Agrarian evolution, War time weapons and the general culture of the people. Noticed a remarkable relationship between The Sri Lankans & Chinese people. Great for kids especially local school children to learn their history. Has a restaurant and one can buy memorabilia from the museum gallery Cafe. Charges attached. All in all a good experience.

Good layout and value for money (if you're local - like everywhere else tourists will have to pay a little bit extra). Great collection that gives a proper insight to the history of Sri Lanka. Calm surroundings, cafes and toilets in the premises.

It's a cheap place to stay around Colombo for government Servant under minimum facility. only Bed sheets / pillow cases provided but not ironed. Need to maintained well. this is a good place to conduct training programmes. But not recommended to stay with the family because of low facility.

There's a lot of potential here. The facade and the surrounding garden are beautiful. Rs 1000 for foreigner isn't cheap by local standard. Take note, this place isn't air conditioned nor it has sufficient indoor lighting. Some rooms are brighter aome are so dark and dull. Cleanliness is so so. The museum is organized in such a way you must finish almost every room from downstairs to upstairs. It is annoying and doesn't give you a quick tour kind of option. Content wise it's fine and giving you heaps of information and exhibits which are associated with their unique history. You'll need an hour or two at least. The attached gift shop sells boring uninteresting souvenirs.

A great potential to teach (especially younger) folk about natural science and living and inanimate things. But the building and the collection is very old and you feel is not going to last many years to the future. Many areas and exhibits are closed off for maintenance predictably. Enthusiastic and helpful staff though.
The main national museum and this shares certain exhibits that belong to each other and perhaps could have been coordinated better

bizarre and more creepy than informative. They had a specimen of an 8 legged, 2 headed goat baby (preserved in brine) that was pretty horrifying. It also seemed like the decorations and information hadn't been changed since 1950. Weird place, and a disappointment compared to the National Museum nearby.
