Specially lot of foreign monks are meditating at this monastery. This place is like heaven. Very silent and peaceful. Well maintained and arranged. Beautiful flowers everywhere. Specially orchids. Open to people between 10am to 12pm. We should adhere to these rules.
Please be calm and silent when you visit there.

Spreading in a large forest area, Na Uyana Aranya is an epitome of peace and tranquility. It is an ideal place to be in for contemplation, mindfulness, and meditation. Better yet, for those who comes here for renouncing the world, for higher training, the ordination. I have spent my golden three months here and I enjoyed single moments of it. The lifetime memories that I made here with my dhamma friends, I cherish now and then. If time permits, I am eager to join this noble place someday again.

Ancient cave dwellings with Brāhmī inscriptions as well as ruins of a small Stupa complex have been found at Na Uyana which date back to 3rd century BCE. The new stupa of the monastery is built on the location of this complex. One inscription states that King Uttiya has donated his pleasure grove to the Sangha. As Uttiya was the successor to King Devanampiya Tissa, during whose reign Buddhism was introduced to Sri Lanka, the ancient monastery at Na Uyana seems to have been one of the first in the country established outside Anuradhapura.

The ancient monastery was rediscovered by Ven. Wigoda Bodhirakkhita Thera in 1954. Sayadaw U Nandavamsa and Sayadaw U Javana, senior Burmese disciples of Mahasi Sayadaw, visited the monastery in 1956.

Ven. Angulgamuwe Ariyananda Thera moved to Na Uyana in 1997 with a group of monks and started a revival that has made it the largest monastery in the Yogasrama Samstha. It is also one of the main international monasteries in Sri Lanka, with about 25 foreign monks. Ven. Nauyane Ariyadhamma Mahathera, the Spiritual Director of Sri Kalyani Yogasrama Samstha, also used to reside at Na Uyana.

Directions from Colombo to Na Uyana

Go to the Railroad Station at Pettah Market.
(There should be a tourist guide in the railroad station they may help you if you need help.)

Walk half a mile until you get St. Christopher's Bus Stop.

Ask for a bus to Melsiripura (Will take around 3 hours to get there)

Once in Melsiripura ask for a bus to Pansiyagama or Na Uyana (will take one more hour to get Pansiyagama)

Once in Pansiyagama you should see a sign that says NA UYANA. Walk down that road. You will pass a school on your right. In around 1 mile you will see another sign saying NA UYANA. Follow that sign. In around 2 miles you will see a sign in Sinhala with a little shrine with a Buddha Image inside. Follow that for around 1 mile and you should see the Bodhi Tree. The Monastery is half a mile after that.

Another tip! If you need someone who speaks English at the monastery try talking to the Doctor in the medicine room. He is a Westerner and speaks English. He is normally there 6am-12.
