Muthiyangana Raja Maha Viharaya is an ancient Buddhist temple located in the middle of Badulla town in the Badulla District of Uva province, Sri Lanka. Buddhists believe that this site has been visited by Gauthama Buddha as the 3rd arrival to the island, and it is regarded as one of the Solosmasthana, the 16 sacred places in the country.

Muthiyangana Raja Maha Viharaya lies in the middle of the busy city of Baddulla in the Uva province. The History of this temple goes back to the time of Buddha but this area around Badulla (specially Uva Province) goes way back in to the time of 19th – 18th century BC. It is believed a During this time the a mighty king called Ravana was ruling this the country with Badulla as the capital. It is also believed that the War of Rama and Ravana in the Indian Epic also happened in this area. There are many places and names which identifies this area (such as Seetha Eliya, Seetha Kotuwa, Ravana Ella) as the location described in this Indian epic. It is said that the Ravana finally lost the war and winner Vibishana took the capital to Kelaniya and the Uva gradually got lost in history until the 5th century BC.

The entrance to the temple is the ‘Thorana’ of a unknown period. This a unique design with six levels. First level include the main entrance and above it on the second level is a typical Makara (dragon) Head. On the sides of the head are two guard figures and and at the corners are two lion figures.

The temple is said to have had 7 Bodhi’s (Bo trees) but 4 has been destroyed in the recent past. The first Bo tree you would come across is the is the “Maliyadeva Bodhi”. This has a special value as this location is said to be the place that the Maliyadeva Thero (who is said to be the last Maha Rahath of this country) made his sermons when he was in Muthiyangana.

Muthiyanganaya Raja Maha Viharaya lies in the centre of the city of Badulla. The History of this temple goes back to the time of Buddha. The Buddha and 500 Arhants visited this Island for the third time on the invitation of Naga King Maniakkhitha to Kelaniya. On that visit, Buddha came to Badulla on the invitation of King Indaka (now elevated to the Deity status), ruler of the Namunukula Mountain Range. King Indaka built a Stupa enshrining some hair and Mukthaka Dathu (drops of sweat turned in to pearls) of the Buddha on the location where Buddha made his sermons. This is the birth of the Muthiyanganaya Stupa. Since then this Stupa and the temple has been expanded, reconstructed and renovated by many kings. If you are staying in Badulla and have time to explore the town, this is nice to visit and you can easily walk from the main road.

Muthiyangana Raja Maha Vihara is an ancient Buddhist temple located in the middle of Badullatown in the Badulla District of Uva Province in Sri Lanka.
History of this site starts with the Lord Buddha’s 3rd arrival to the island but legends on the area called Badulla begins from 19th – 18th century BC. Some names of places in the area, e.g. Seetha Eliya, SeethaKotuwa, Ravana Ella, etc., refers to the Seetha and Ravana - the main characters in the Indian episode titled Ramayana. So it is believed that said war had taken place in this locale, where was the capital of then powerful king named Ravana who ruled the island.

Muthiyanganaya Viharaya - At the southern end of Badulla stands the Muthiyangana Vihara whose origins date back 5th Century BC. Buddha is believed to have visited Lanka for the third time, on the eighth year following the supreme enlightenment. King Indaka of pre-historic (meaning prior to our recorded history) tribe Deva (one of the three tribes believed have inhabited Lanka, the other tribes being Yakka & Naga) built Muthiyangana stupa at the location where Buddha is believed to have made the sermons. The stupa was developed into a temple complex by a succession of Sinhalese kings commencing from King Devanam Piya Tissa (307-266 BC), The Deer Hunter, the first Sinhalese convert to Buddhism.
