A well maintained place. Nicely painted roofs as visible from outside distance. Once inside, most of buildings were locked so couldn't visit buildings inside.

This is the headquarters of the Malwatta chapter of Siyam Maha nikaya. There are two Buddhist monasteries that holds the custodianship of sacred tooth relic of Lord Buddha kept in Sri Dalada Maligawa and Malwatta chapter is one of them. So this place is is among the oldest Buddhist Sangha of the Siam Nikaya monastic order. Chief Incumbent of Mawathu Maha Viharaya is the "Mahanayaka" Thero. That is like a kingship among monks of Malwatta Chapter and there are only two like that. The other one is Mahayanaka of Asgiri Chapter.
This temple was built by King Senasammatha Wickramabahu. King Keerthi Sri Rajasinghe made some improvements with buildings later.

This place happen to be one of the oldest and eccentric religious places in Kandy.. Well recommend for tourists who interested in "sightseeing"..
Although its the governing centre and the quarters for one of the major sects in srilankan monk community, and responsible for performing traditional and ritualistic matters, yet this place is way less helpful in terms of practicing dhamma in a practical sence..
Therefore, litterally not recommend for people who seeks dhamma..response / report this review -

Malwathu Maha Viharaya (also called Malwatta temple) is a Buddhist monastery located in Kandy, Sri Lanka. It is the headquarters of the Malwatta chapter of Siyam Nikaya and one of the two Buddhist monasteries that holds the custodianship of sacred tooth relic of Lord Buddha kept in Sri Dalada Maligawa, Kandy. The chief incumbent of the Malwathu Maha Viharaya is the Mahanayaka thero of Malwatta chapter of Siyam nikaya, a leading Buddhist monastic fraternity in Sri Lanka. The present chief incumbent of Malwathu Maha Viharaya is venrable Thibbatuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Thero.
