Thw temple has a history going back to the era of the kandyan kingdom.
The temples is mostly constructed on a large rock and there is a large scale budhdha statue which attract the attention of many visitors. The stupa and the bodhi tree is also on the same rock.
The temple has an old viharaya with partially damamged older paintings of buddihist jathaka stories. They may have an kandyan influence in them. The temple sits in calm and quiet surrounding near the water ateeam and the paddy field. The temple consist of a large hall for the devotees to reside in poya day observances.
Other than the temple, the property contains a shrine for the suniyam god called the kabalae dewala, which is popular around Sri lanka. People usually come from all around the country to get blessings from the shrine mostly on wednesdays and saturdays.
