One of the famous places in sacred Anuradhapura city for its ancient carvings and murals. Specially, the world famous mural "The Lovers" is located at this temple.

The historic place with a lot of valuable artifacts including "The Lovers" and "The man and the horse's head". Government was able to maintain and renovate the structures as similar as possible.Even though this has a considerably large parking area, there is no shelter for the vehicles.

To anyone from the Sikh faith who has a turban. The security officials will not let you enter the temples as they deem it a 'hat'. Very surprised as I've spent the last 6 months visiting buddhist temples across far East Asia, SE Asia and India. You'd expect there to be a recognition of the sacred importance of the turban to the Sikh faith but this is not the ccas here. Will be following this up with the temple management

After visiting the rest of the sacred city this is a nice place to end. It is close to the new town and not very crowded. Does ask for a separate entrance fee though, 200 rupee at the start of 2018.

One of the most peaceful places even by the standards of Anuradhapura. Most famous for the Isurumuniya Lovers (ඉසුරුමුණිය පෙම් යුවල) - a stone carving of a couple, which is currently in display at the museum at the same premises. (Which closes at dusk) and also the Man and the Horse (මිනිසා සහ අශ්ව හිස) - another stone carving on the rock which the whole structure is built on. This can ve closely observable after traversing a small set of stairs. Don't forget to circle the whole structure so that you can climb the rock to have a great view, observe some marvelous places of architecture. Highly recommend and best at the dusk. But don't be too atw or the museum would be closed for the day.

Isurumuniya dates from the 3rd century BC.it is a forest monastery nesting among rocks, the Ranmasu Uyana garden and the great Tssawewa. It is said that monks who originally belongs to the yaksa community resided here. It is disngguished for the intriguing sculpture in relief on the rock at the northern end of a pond, and also the famous sculpture of the lovers.

ISURUMUNIYA
Isurumuniya is a Buddhist temple situated near to the Tissa Wewa (Tisa tank) in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka. There are four carvings of special interest in this Vihara. They are the Isurumuniya Lovers, Elephant Pond and The Royal Family.
The temple was built by King Devanampiya Tissa (307 BC to 267 BC) who ruled in the ancient Sri Lankan capital of Anuradhapura. During his reign 500 high caste children were ordained, and Isurumuniya was built as a monastic complex to house all of them. Thereafter it was renovated by King Kasyapa (473 – 491 AD) who renamed it “Boupulvan Kasubgiri Radmaha Vehera” – a combination of his name along with his two daughters’. There is a viharaya connected to a cave and above is a cliff. A small stupa is built on it. It can be seen that the constructional work of this stupa belong to the present period. Lower down on both sides of a cleft, in a rock that appears to rise out of a pool, have been carved the figures of elephants.response / report this review -

A buddhist temple beside the Thisa Wewa. Another palce that will take your breath away with it stunning views and stone carvings. You can climb on top of the rock and enjoy the hypnotic view of the Thisa Wewa and surroundings.
