Ancient rock temple situated between Medawachchiya and Vauniya just few kilometers from Medawachchiya town on the A9 Kandy – Jaffna road. This temple complex was built by the King Devanampiyathissa after the introduction of Buddhism to Sri Lanka. The view from this rock is breathtaking. You can get a 360 degree view of the whole area from this point. It is belived that Arahath Mahindha thero visited here before went to Mihinthale to meet King Devanampiyathissa. Mihinthale is clearly seen form top of the Isinbessagala rock. It is better to climb the rock in the morning or evening to avoid the heat at the noon.

A large rock and a name board claiming the name of “Isinbassagala”. The name loosely translate to “the rock that the sage came from”. This temple complex was built by the King Devanampiyathissa (250-210 BC) right after the introduction of Buddhism to Sri Lanka. (Copy)

Isin Bessa Gala is Located approximately 2km away from Medawachchiya, which is a town in Anuradhapura. This temple complex was built by the King Devanampiyathissa (250-210 BC) right after the introduction of Buddhism to Sri Lanka.According the chief monk residing on the temple, this represents a two generations of worship culture. According to him the Snake Stone is a object of worship of the Naga (Cobra) tribes which was used before the arrival of Buddhism in the country.

what an amazing place! we climbed the rock to pay our respects at the stupa, and not only to enjoy the amazing views towards Ruwanweliseya and beyond but also to experience the spiritual energy visibly present here. A historical location you must visit. do respect the tranquility and the peace this highly significant religious location offer.
