Arguably one of the more important structures in Colombo, its a must visit even if just for a picnic and relaxation. There is also a museum that provides important insight into the history of it. Afternoon time is one of the nicer times to visit as the structures allow for cooling.

One of the most important and popular tourist destinations with lots of historical value. Located in the heart of Colombo, with a huge green environment all around it, it is a great place to relax, go for family outings and picnics, and enjoy nature right here in Colombo. It also contains a museum with historical information regarding independence. it is also a great place to go jogging, cycling and to workout; it has specially designed areas, equipment and facilities for this purpose.

I believe it is the best place in Colombo for anyone to have an morning or evening walk , jog or to spend time freely with their loved ones. Historical place where Sri Lanka used to celebrate the Independence day now have turned to a relaxing place after adding new constructions. Adjacent property is the Independence Arcade, again a historical building turned to a modern shopping arcade where you can find some of the premium brands.

Independence Square is one of the nicest places to relax in Colombo. In addition to the memorial hall itself, there's also the huge green lawn outside, the memorial museum, and the Arcade next door. Superb place for a walk or jog around the Independence Square. Early morning walks are ideal since mornings are less crowded but evenings can get a bit too crowded.

Over the many years, this has been the place where people enjoy evenings with their families, or do some light exercise. This place is now frequented by the fitness conscious, and is a great place if you want to get your exercise in with a great crowd. There is a free gym (albeit limited equipment) and plenty of space to spread out your mat.

One of the central places in Colombo, this is the memorial to mark the independence of Sri Lanka from the British. A huge memorial, it contains plenty of information about the movement and history. A nice garden around the area helps you to jog, run or sit in peace and talk to people. You also have a nearby shopping complex with high end brands where you can do some shopping as well. Recently they celebrated 70 years of independence as well. Don't miss it.

Not the greatest of public park around the world. They don't allow pets and play. Further if you are dark skinned, you are not allowed to use a DLSR without permission.

Great farm if you want to play ingress.

This is one of the main historical monuments in Sri Lanka and many tourists who comes to Colombo don't forget to visit this beautiful monument.
Many locals use the walking path around the monument and the well maintained grass patches in the morning and in the evening as a park to enjoy thieir daily walk and exercises.
Romantic couples also find this place suiting for a relaxing walk or enjoy a quite conversation on the grass or on a bench under a tree.

There are two shopping complexes (Independence Arcade/ Race Course) also near by and you can shop and dine there as well.

Weather it is to see a historical monument, relax , exercise, or even as a play spot for the kids, this place is a perfect get away in busy Colombo city.

This open area next to the historical Independence monument is a popular place for joggers. It’s fairly crowded throughout the day, but the large space shaded by trees is good for a break from the busy city. The only thing I don’t like about this place are the rude security guards.

A very good place to spend an evening, and also for some exercise as well. an awesome place for jogging too. The disadvantage I found is to find a washroom, I don't think there is one if I have not mistaken. But we can use the one at the Arcade which is just a walking distance from there.

We go there for a morning walk and it's absolutely fantastic for that purpose.
Though there is a historical value to it and there is a small museum in the premises, I don't think the officers in charge of the facility are interested in promoting it.
However, its well maintained, has good parking, can find a good toilet in the nearby arcade and it's safe early in the morning.

Good for walks exercise or just relaxing. Decent crowd (unlike some other parks where there is a bit of not so good behaviour in respecting the rights of others to use the place).

bit annoying though to see signs that say "No Playing" cause it is not very child friendly. and there is literally no other option in Colombo for a decent play area for kids.

A National Monument and one of the most historic places in Sri Lanka. This place built for commemoration of the independence of Sri Lanka from the British rule on February 4, 1948. A great place to hangout with nice cool breeze. Many people come there to do their regular workouts in the morning and the evening. During those times, this place is bit crowded and busy but in the other parts of the day, it has very calm environment.
In the basement of the hall, there is a newly built Museum about the brief history of Sri Lankan freedom fighters and war heroes. The Museum is open during the normal office hours and Its better to visit there.
Recently, the National Day events are held in this place.
