Ancient temple
According to historical records, when the sapling of the Sri Maha Bodhi of India was planted in Anuradhapura Mahamevuna Uyana, 8 offshoots sprung from it and they were planted in various locations through out the country.
Four off shoots sprung from each of the 8 trees and these 32 off shoots were again distributed to various parts of the country. The first 8 trees are known as ‘Ashtapala Maha Bodhi’ and the next 32 is known as ‘Dethispala Maha Bodhi’. One of these 32 Bodhi’s 0ne was planted at the Buttala Happoruwa Purana Viharya. Thus the Bodhi tree at Happoruwa is thought to be over 2000 years old.
In addtion to the Bodhiya, you will also see ruins of an ancient stupa, now resembling a mound of earth. No restoration effort has been carried out so far.
