The Kingdom of Dambadeniya, the Third Ancient Capital of Sri Lanka became prominent in the early 13th century. King Vijayabahu 11 is the first King of Dambadeniya Kingdom. King Parakramabahu 11 was the King who inherited the throne after the King Vijayabahu. The Wijayasundaram temple was used during this time as the Sacred Tooth Relic Shrine.

Wijayasundararamaya temple at Dambadeniya which was used as the Tooth Relic shrine in Dambadeniya era. King Vijayabahu 111 is the first King of Dambadeniya kingdom. But Dambadeniya has no grand ruins like Polonnaruwa, the remains consist of the Dambadeniya temple, the most accessible part of the temple is called the Wijayasundaram. Dambadeniya, The third ancient capital of Sri Lanka.
Dambadeniya was actually a high security zone to hide the Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha from invaders from India. Though not as grand with ancient ruins Dambadeniya is definitely a recommended site to visit as a day excursion.

Sri Wijesundararama Raja maha viharaya is a Buddhist temple build during the period of Dambadeniya Kingdom, in 13th century. This ancient temple has many Buddha Statues and paintings with all characteristics that are found in temple art works done in that eara. The Stupa of this temple is fully covered with an "Stupagharaya", which is a shelter covering the entire Stupa. There are only few Stupaghara's remaining in the island. During the 13th century, most of the structures were built with bricks. Therefore, some of the archaeologically important structures are now only ruins. The old Dhathu Mandiraya is a very precious structure still remains unharmed.

Dambadeniya is a majestic, isolated, ancient city off the Kurunegala- Giriulla road. From the Kurunegala town off the Giriulla road, this winding road leads to Giriulla where it runs through sprawling rice fields interlaced with coconut plantations. Looming over this is a prominent rock boulder called, ‘Waduwa Ketu Gala’ a rock in the shape of an egg, with a long rock cut flight of steps from the top to the bottom. Perhaps, this is one of the amazing creations I ever saw during my visits to ancient places around the country, so far.

It is not often that we hear of the 13th century Kingdom of Dambadeniya. Recently, travelling on the highway that links Kurunegala to Giriulla, we made up our minds to drop in at the Dambadeniya Raja Maha Vihara, better known as Dambadeniya Vijayasundararamaya.

When we arrived at the temple, the scorching sun’s rays filtered directly to the temple’s sandy compound from the cloudless blue sky, making it a difficult walk on the burning sand. From a distance we glimpsed an ancient building with some murals. As we walked into its modern precincts, a board indicated that here was included the ancient Dalada Maligawa. Walking further up, we spotted the two storied quaint Vihara Mandiraya set in the middle of a cluster of modern buildings, believed to have been the old Dalada Maligawa. The wooden stairs, which forms a part of the building, can be ascended by a steep precariously slanting stairway, which leads to a modest shrine room.

This temple housed the sacred tooth relics of Buddha during Dambadeniya era, until it was moved to Yapahuwa kingdom. The ancient temple, "chetgiya-gara" (roofed pagoda) and few other old (over 500 years) constructions are still standing as a living proof of the civilization.
