  Sigiriya is located in Matale District in the Central Province of Sri Lanka. It is within the Cultural Triangle, which includes five of the island's seven world Heritage Sites.
  Sigirya itself is one of them. During the 5th century AD it was built as a fortress and palace by King Kashyapa, who had usurped the throne and chose the towering volcanic rock it is built upon as a good defense position in case the exiled King Dhatusena would return from south India and try to reclaim his throne. During Kasyapa's reign Sigiriya was developed into an impressive host of cultural treasures such as the giant frescoes that are said to have covered the entire western face of the rock. Or the graffiti on the “Mirror Wall”, a part of the rock that was covered by a porcelain-like substance that was polished so well the king could see himself in it. People passing the Mirror Wall would begin to write poems and messages on it, creating the oldest preserved examples of ancient Sinhalese poetry. The stairs to the fortress were adorned with a giant lion sculpture. Whoever wanted to ascend the stairs had to go through the lion's muzzle first.
