Buduruwagala is an ancient buddhist temple in Sri Lanka. The complex consists of seven statues and belongs to the Mahayana school of thought. The statues date back to the 10th century. The gigantic Buddha statue still bears traces of its original stuccoed robe and a long streak of orange suggests it was once brightly painted. The central of the three figures to the Buddha's right is thought to be the Buddhist mythological figure-the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara. To the left of this white painted figure is a female figure in the thrice-bent posture, which is thought to be his consort-Tara.
The largest of the standing Buddha statues is 51 feet (16 m) from head to toe; is the largest standing Buddha statue of the island.Authorities generally date them to the 9th or 10th century.Buduruvagala does not have much historical records. Even its original name is unknown. It is thought to be a hermitage for monks. The sculptures of Buduruvagala also include many sculptures of Bodhisattva images including Mahayana tradition.
On the same rock where the sculptures are carved, there is a carved shape of about 3 feet (0.91 m) wide and 4 feet (1.2 m) heigh. It is of the shape of a flame. The inside wall of this carved shape is always wet of an oil that smells very much like Mustard oil. This oil comes to the carved shape with no explainable source or reason.

Buduruwagala Rajamaha Vihara (බුදුරුවගල රජමහ විහාරය) is believed to be built in the Anuradhapura Period. The statues on the rock wall depicts the Mahayana influence on Sri Lankan sculpture. Largest of the statues is about 15m (50 feet) tall.

We arrived late and camp at the ticket office at the night. The place are peaceful and people are very friendly and helpful. The huge buda on the rock is a sensation, we spent 2 hours there, very peaceful snd quiet place. With well organized stuff. Totally worst it to spend 350 Lupee to visit.

Road leading to the temple is under repairs. So the road is motorable. but a three wheeler service is available. My advice is to take the very scenic walk to the temple.

Considered as the worlds tallest stone carved buddha statue in the world ( Former record holder Bahmian buddha statue were destroyed by Talaiban in 2001).Its worth to wisit while you travel from yala to the upcountry or Arugambay.
its beleved that this carvings were made between 6th to 8th century AD ( end of Anuradhapura Kingdom ).
Buduruwagala lake is located on the way to temple and its a perfect location to take a break.

Mythree bosathanan ,which means the 24 th person who attain budhood. Present day we see the 27 Gauthama Budha. The statue is mythree bosathanan. Leaft and right shows some therawada and mahayana sculptures of ghods. These sculptures are around 2100 years old carvings.

Superb, quiet, laid-back archeological site which was fairly priced (unlike other unconscionably - and discriminatorily - prices sites throughout Sri Lanka). Be warned that the hike to and from the carvings is a bit of a slog, but well worth it! And you can get to meet oodles of young children and villagers along the way! Well
worth the effort all around!
