A short drive from town centre brings one to this airport which is small. Check in and customs very efficient. Very clean bathrooms. Small central area for seating which serves three gates. A few food stalls, one duty free and one souvenir shop. Clear announcements.
Wattay International Airport (VTE) is one of the few international airports in Laos. Wattay International Airport is located about 3 km outside of the city centre of Vientiane. The airport consists of an old and small domestic terminal and a new international terminal. Eating and/or drinking is very limited. Laos people are very friendly and helpful. Obtaining a Laos visa on arrival (at the airport) is the most convenient, cheapest, and time saving way to get a Laos visa. The visa obtained on arrival is usually a tourist visa. With this visa you can stay in Laos for up to 30 days but it is absolutely prohibited from getting employment in Laos. Other types of visas such as business and official visas can be picked up on arrival as well, provided that you have arranged everything needed and you have a letter of approval (or an entry visa number) from Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Laos. We flew from Bangkok to Vientiane (Wattay International Airport) a few times and received our visa hassle free. The cheapest is to pay the visa fee in US dollars. We paid 35 USD per person. It is also possible to pay in Thai baht (1500 Thai baht). ATM's available. In short: a hassle-free airport!
Compared to last year, the international arrivals area has improved a lot - there are more counters, better facilities and lighting, etc. It can get quite congested in the evening though with many flights from Incheon and Bangkok. The airport lounge could also use a makeover - the food is mostly stale and options are limited. It's undergoing renovation and expansion so I'm expecting it to be better and more organized in the near future. A new public bus service has just started too, improving accessibility and providing a cheaper option to go to the city.
Pretty small airport , with very little to offer . It is in a gloomy setting and it looks so old because they haven't renovated it , and the stores here were built in the 70s and 80s , and bad dining options too. Lack of restaurants and cafes here , and most of the food sold here is food from other restaurants in Vientiane in a refrigerator , which means it is bad quality . The only thing good is getting in and out is easy and immigration process is better than most .
For arrivals this is a great airport.
Clean toilets.
Easy to navigate. Fast visa purchase, immigration and customs.
The easiest taxi pay and transfer ever.
Very small arrival hall with no frogs options.
Custom process was easy and fast. People are friendly. Need to have more restaurant selection at a reasonable price past custom.
PLEASE consider eliminating The Smoking Room in this area, the area is very small, and passengers with asthma are coughing and dying. It is also a danger to your employees who work in this international gate day in and day out (it less than 3700 sf in room size, not very big and the smoke is trapped). Please consider your passengers that do not smoke and cannot breath while waiting for the flight.
Lao airlines is good and quick but the airport is quite expensive especially considering that once you're at the gate you only have one coffee place where you can buy five time the price for coffee 4 times the price for water. At the duty free they accept dollars and Chinese yen but if you want to pay in kip they charge more (bad rate) and even asked for more when you pay (76124kip becomes 77000) Shameless.
It was very small. I loved staying here in Laos with my family and it was so fun. When I first got here, customs is quite fast, only because there is nobody. Immigration is slow because of all the people in line. Other than that, this airport is great. Loved the buffet.
Nothing special. Immigration was quick issuing my visa on arrival and they have a taxi service to your hotel
Don't let it fools you by the look. The airport is small and old, the Business Lounge is horrible but there's one hidden charm. The THING that earns a 5 stars rating is in the buffet restaurant on the 3rd floor. Don't go through custom, take the lift to the 3rd fl. Pay 10 dollars and you'll get: salmon sashimi, steak, load of Laos food, hot tom yum cooked with your selection of food, fruits, sweet, and a hood selection of wines (extra cost). This one beats any airport any day IMO.
Awful airport. Food selection is terrible. One "restaurant" past immigration. Which only sells one food item. A refrigerated burger. No where to refill water after immigration and the whole airport has a gloomy depressing feel to it.
Like many airports across this part of the world Vientiane could do with an upgrade. Parts of it are well past their use by date - but all of my trips through the airport were efficient and without drama.
Lots of room for improvement. But in general it's ok to welcome visitors.
Small and old-fashioned airport, need major renovation please.. especially the check-in weighing machine.
Small airport which need urgent upgrading. However, passing through custom is quite seamless and fast. VOA is available price is behind counter. They should have big sign there so it's easy for people to see as there people obtain VOA. Many disturb officers processing application. The safe way to city or hotel is by yellow taxi though it can be expensive. It's about 15 minutes by taxi and costs around $10.
The domestic terminal is a great example of communist architecture that has not changed in many years. No real facilities to speak of so if you have some time to kill I would recommend walking next door to the international terminal. At least there are a few places for food and coffee.
The international terminal is probably sufficient for the number of flights it gets but not too impressive for the airport of a capital city. There are plans to expand it though so maybe improvements are on the way.
