This is the current hot spot and number one destination for those visiting Central Laos/Khammouane Province. Most do it as part of the THAKHEK LOOP TRIP but for those on a tight schedule, and a not so tight budget, GREEN DISCOVERY LAOS – with a booking desk at the INTHIRA HOTEL, THAKHEK – does single day tours to Khong Lor Cave. Transportation, to and from, is by way of minibus and prices are dependent of the number of people going for the day. Whichever way you choose to do it, it’s certainly a trip to remember. The full trip through the 7.5 kilometer cave is done in a long tail boat. During the dry season (December – April) the river can be quite shallow in places and you may be required to get out and wade for a few meters while the boat team push the boat across sections they’re unable to motor through; wear shorts and sandals or footwear you can afford to get soaked.

Distance from Thakhek to Konglor Cave: 186 kilometers via highways # 13 and # 8
Approximate travel time on a motorbike: 5 – 6 hours
Approximate time for cave tour: 2 – 3 hours

Really cool cave, biggest I've been in. You park outside the gates and pay 2k kip for entrance, walk for a couple of minutes and then pay for the boat tour. Maximum 3 people per boat and around 130-140k kip per boat, you might be able to find other people by the ticket office to save money. Deposit of 50k to rent a headlight. It was alright to wear flip-flops, att least when we were there (beginning of March). Boat ride was great! We had to get out of the boat to walk and help drag the boat over some shallow water. On the other side there is sort of a camp by the river with some places to buy food/snacks.

Amazing cave. Biggest cave I've ever been in. Endless and such amazing visuals. The water in the cave is beautiful as soon as you get to the mouth the water is so clear.

It is a nice cave. You can reach it only by boat:
1 person - 110k
2 persons -120k
3 persons -130k
Take flashlighter if you can, if not they can rent you some. Good idea to go in flipflops or without shoes at all, because you wil get wet. At the end you will reach a village, they are selling some souvenirs so take some money if you want to buy something. We left all money in the locker - so did not buy anything.

Very beautiful cave but I've got some problems to get back to ban nahin. So beware! Get here very early. The cave closes at 4 p.m. and the last songthaew to get back leaves at 2 p.m.

The main attraction on Thakhek loop, and rightfully so. It's about 7km long boat ride in pitch dark, only handful of flash lights. Locals boat driving skills are equally impressive. On the other side of the cave there is traditional village selling hand made product. While it might feel like a tourist trap, it is not. Locals have learned how to make nice products and invest a lot of their time and effort in making each item. This can be observed while visiting. Pricing is very reasonable as well.

Amazing and thrilling experience! Really worth the money. Try to come with 3 persons since that is the maximum per boat which will save you some money. Also there is the possibility to hike back after reaching the end of the cave rather then taking the same boat back. We did not know this before going so we missed out since we did not take our hiking shoes. The hike has to be done with a guide and takes 5-6 hours.

Absolute must see in the region. The cave is amazing and big I've never seen something like this before on the world. The guides know exactly how and where to drive in the dark. Must see in the region.

Beautiful cave, definitely worth saving for last (meaning doing the loop anti-clockwise). The only thing that was a bit of a shame for me, was that the part where we were supposed so walk and see the beauty of the cave, was dark because of a power problem, and the flashlights are not strong enough to illuminate an entire cave :-)
Plus, we arrived in puring rain and when we exited the cave into the other side (half way into the tour) they led us by boat to a place to have a break. The last thing we wanted was a break in the rain, and we asked to be taken back. So, if you have the same situation, and you don't need a toilet break or wanna buy snacks or souvenirs - ask them to go back just as you reach the other side.
Other than that the staff was very nice (no one could give us info about the cave unfortunately, but that was expected) and the experience was great.
Definitely recommend!

This amazing 7,5 kilometers-long limestone cave was formed by the Hinboun River which still flows through the cave year-round. You can take a boat ride right through the main cave, which is up to 90 meters wide and 100 meters high. The Kong Lor Cave can be reached via a 40 kilometers overland trip from Ban Khounkham (the Gateway to Kong Lor) or by taking a slightly longer but more adventurous boat trip up the Hinboun River beginning in Naphouak village. Homestays are available in Natan and Kong Lor villages.
