First the owners, Tanoi and Sanders are very welcoming and friendly! They are always ready to give you advices about things to do in the islands and tell you stories about Lao lifestyle.
Then, the accomodation is simple but the location is “ little paradise”, it’s in front of the mekong (you can go swimming!) in the middle of an isolated island with no tourists and where you can appreciate the real Lao life and local people. You will be maximum 6 tourist on the island at the same time!
You can rent bike and bicycle, and visit the others island Don Det and Don Khong easily. You just have to cross by boat (10000kip max per person).
They also serve food for breakfast and dinner and the food is delicious! Thanks to the cookers Tanoi and Nongnoi ;)

Our stay at the Don Som Riverside was wonderful. If you'd like to enjoy the real Laos, you should bring Sander and Tanoi a visit. You can see the sunrise at the Mekong, eat delicious food, relax in a lovely scenary, enjoy the peace in a real Laotian village and even join a cooking class or go fishing with a local. Don Som isn't the obvious choice, a little bit off the beaten track but totally worth it. The owner and his wife (and all the animals) make you feel right at home. We had a really great time here!

If you want to go the 4000 islands, this is the place to go! As this is the only guesthouse on the island you can really experience the local Laotian life on the countryside. It's still close to the main tourist attractions, we rented a bike for one day to visit Don Khon and Don Det.
This place offers delicious traditional food and is prepared by the awesome hosts Sander and Tanoi. Besides that, they can give you good advice on the places to visit in Laos.
This was our best experience on our 2 months journey through South East Asia!response / report this review -

I love this place. It's so quiet and relaxed here. The hosts are greatly concerned about your well-being. The bungalows are very basic and there's no wifi or warm water shower(bucked shower). But you have friendly people around you, a hammock right by the river in which you also can swim and always enough private sphere. It's the not-busy-at-all counterpart to Don Det. If you just want to have a relaxed time this is definitely the place to be.

If you are someone who appreciates the slower pace, without all the mod cons, then this is the place for you.
I recently took a friend visiting from Canada on an 8 day motorcycle trip to Southern Laos from Savannakhet. I wanted him to have a trip to remember and see the rural side of life in Laos. I arranged that 3 of our nights would be spent at Don Som Riverside Guesthouse and we were not disappointed.
Sander and Tanoi have a wonderfully relaxing property on the riverside, with beautiful sunrises at your doorstep. They are wonderful hosts, and happily share their personal stories about living on a fairly remote island in the Kong District.
The accommodations are basic, but comfortable and each room has mosquito netting for sleeping. There is electricty to each bungalow, and several power points in each. There is no Internet, but why not unplug for a few days?!
The small menu of authentic Lao food is delicious. Trust me, we tried most of it! There are also some Western breakfast options, if thats what you'd prefer. There are soft drinks and cold beer on hand to help pass the time as the day transitions into night.
We signed up for the cooking class offered. In the first part of the morning, you are taken by boat to that mainland to visit a local Lao market. Here you shop for the ingredients of the 5 dishes you will cook. Once shopping is done, you return back to Don Som by boat, and beginning your adventure into Lao food. Having lived in Laos for 8.5 yrs, the 5 dishes are a good representation of foods that you would find locals eating on a daily basis. During the class, Tanoi works along side of you, and Sander provides English commentary about ingredients and techniques. After about 2hrs, then food is done and you sit down to eat and enjoy your hard work. One of the most memorable parts of the class, is that is set with the Mekong river as the back drop. It was a great day! If you are vegetarian, just mention it to them, and they will modify the recipes to suit. A pair of girls from the UK did this, and they were very pleased with the result.
If you plan to visit Don Som, talk with Sander before hand. It's not hard to get to Don Som, but his useful travel information will make it that much easier for you to get on with enjoying your time with them!

Verblijf in een ruime bungalow, eenvoudig maar zeer netjes. Verwacht geen wifi of warme douche, maar een hartverwarmend welkom door Ta Noi en haar Nederlandse echtgenoot is wel gegarandeerd. Gezellig praten, veel info en weetjes over de plaatselijke gebruiken en de geschiedenis van laos. Een aanrader voor wie eens buiten de toeristische plaatsen in een authentiek laotiaans dorp wil verblijven.
