Okay, just to clarify things with Google maps. This indicated spot called BOLAVEN PLATEAU, is nowhere near the actual plateau. Swap to the satellite picture and you will see it's down on the low lands. To get to the BOLAVEN PLATEAU from PAKSE, you need to go directly up highway 16E. This will lead you directly up to the TAD FANE AREA.

Okay, so this is the most popular area. Even 5 years ago, TAD FANE and TAD YUANG were crowded already with hordes of mainstream tourists. If you want to come to see these waterfalls, go in the raining season (June - October) when the waterfalls will be in full flow and crowds are less. Think about it: most mainstream tourists (as opposed to travelers) won't want to go look at waterfalls when it's raining.

If you are young travelers doing the loop trip then go to TAD CHAMPEE first (opposite side of the road to TAD FANE) because it's a 3 km drive down a dirt track and a long walk from the parking area and this generally keeps most of the mainstream tourists away. TAD CHAMPEE is the least crowded of the 3 falls and also has the best swimming hole.

If you want to get well away from the crowds then just ride on through PAKSONG and continue on to the biggest waterfall in Laos; TAD KATAMTOK. No crowds anywhere and a truly awesome waterfall.

Very disappointed for visiting Bolaven Plateau. Nothing is spectacular except gorgeous numerous waterfalls. Huge tourist crowds and tour buses are everywhere in Bolaven Plateau. The road traffic to Bolaven Plateau was heavy and busy.

Splendide. Des cascades assourdissantes.

One of the highlights of my trip in south east Asia. You can rent a motor bike in pakse for 50k kip/day and explore this amazing landscape. You will find stunning waterfall where you can swim in, coffee fields and tribe villages. I was camping for 3 nights at riverside spots.
