Finding american style poker in the post soviet industrial city of Almaty, Kazakhstan is about as easy as it sounds. Once you do however the game is as you would expect in any Las Vegas casino. Except the $50 membership fee just to enter, the mandatory coat check, the smoking at the table and that everyone is speaking Russian. Beyond that, home.

The casinos themselves are not in Almaty proper but about an hour north in the city of Kaptchagay. A resort town near the lake with winter activities. There is only one that offers American style Texas holdem. The Bombay Poker Club. The rest do have Russian poker and some have the table game where you play against the dealer. Ultimate Texas holdem I assume.

There are a half dozen casinos along the lake front strip known as Kaz Vegas. I went to the Bombay casino because they recently hosted a WPT event and I figured it would be a good place to start. Turns out I ended there too as they have the only poker room in the area.

Upon arrival you will probably have to wait for an English speaker to come and help you at the registration desk. There is a $50 membership fee for the poker club even if you are there for a night.

There is a good bit of security with metal doctors at the door and plenty of serious looking men in suits. They have a coat check and it is mandatory. Free but you don't have the option. I never felt nervous though. The place is elegant enough to rival most casinos.

The poker room itself is beautiful. Four standard 10 handed poker tables along with tables for chess, backgammon and I think mahjong. The cards were high quality and they changed decks with each new dealer.

The game played well. I was the only tourist but I wasn't uncomfortable or unwelcome. Players tried their English on me and we all got along fine. We played 1 / 2 blinds no limit. The poker room takes every manner of currency to buy in but the game plays by dollars. I am not sure if there is a cap but when the game started most of us has $300.

I was never able to figure out the rake. I believe it was min 5% and max 10% but there had to be a minimum in the pot. They do have a couple of jackpot promotions. Aces full beaten and a bonus for any royal shown.

The room has dedicated wait staff and a full menu of free food and beverages. Included in the membership I assume. They even have blankets if you're chilly. I would say the room was run very very well.

Now if you are not a poker player and want to try the other games like blackjack or roulette (I didn't see craps) they have those too. All the casinos have them BUT there is a minimum to enter the building. At the front door you will be asked to buy in $500 in USD. They give you chips and then you go inside to play. You don't have to spend the whole $500 but their goal is to get you as ready to gamble as possible. So if you plan to casino hop bring plenty of cash so you always have enough to cover the door fee. Cashing out was not a problem. I got US dollars back.

It was for me a 7000 tenge cab fare arranged by my hotel. At the time 345 tenge for 1 us dollar. So each way was $20. I arranged the cab through my hotel and also had them come get me so that there wouldn't be any issues. Probably a higher rate than a local but I didn't want to chance anything. I think I could have negotiated it down to 5000 but it wasn't worth the trouble.

So if you're up for an adventure and have some time in that part of the world go check out Bombay casino. I not sure the casual player would want to make the trek from Almaty up there for a short session. It's tough to beat the fee and the rake but finding poker everywhere I travel else is kind of my hobby so it was worth the effort. Check raising all in and getting paid off with aces certainly helped.
