"I was fortunate enough to be exposed to veterinary medicine since I was a child because my father is a veterinarian. Growing up, I’d spend most of my weekends and afternoons after school at his clinic watching him perform what appeared at the time to me as miracles. This early exposure to clinical practice combined with my own interest in biological sciences fostered a burning desire to pursue veterinary medicine. My... goal is to become a small animal practise owner, that said I still do enjoy learning about equine and food animal material as they are crucial in being a well-rounded veterinarian.

Some of my hobbies include: taking my dog, Georgie, for walks especially on the beach and playing soccer competitively."

"Born and raised in Borneo (Sabah), Malaysia! (Yes, where the orangutans and pygmy elephants are. And no, I do not live in the trees and yes, I’ve been asked this question a few times.)

Veterinary Interests: Conservation medicine (aquatic and terrestrial), integrative medicine (including traditional Chinese medicine and hyperbaric treatment), and surgery!

Hobbies: Scuba diving (anything ocean related really haha), book lover, photography, yoga, hiking, traveling (one of my biggest passion), and just any adventures in general!

Favourite book: Hardest question to ask a book nerd. I can spend hours on this. Favourite food: Anything that don’t eat me first. (well except pineapples on pizza. Cause I’m that person.) Favourite sport: Swimming, football (soccer for you Americans) and American football. Favourite movies: Refer back to the favourite book part.

Any pets? Of course! My sweet black little cat, Maggie and my tabby demon child/cat, Church (Ironic name but there’s a story behind that. Just ask me if you wanna know. I still adore him though)"

Veterinary Leadership Conference Student Contributor: Tiffany Chisholm

The American Veterinary Medical Association recently hosted their annual Veterinary Leadership Conference in Chicago. As the SMU vet student delegate for the conference, I found the experience to be one of a kind. Not only did I meet students from all over the world, including the Royal Vet College of London, but I also got to meet specialists, clinic owners and veterinarians from across the USA.

    ...

The conference included student dinners, meet-and-greets, break-out sessions, seminars and extra time for a little touring of the city. Two useful things I got out of the experience were (1) the chance to discuss leadership skills, especially handling stress in the workplace, with other veterinary professionals and (2) networking and acquiring two potential externship opportunities for my clinical year.

Even though the temperature reached 1 degree Fahrenheit (with -25 windchill!), I have zero regrets going, and would highly recommend students apply for the experience in the future.
