  The hotel is run down and service is not super friendly, but can't really complain for 400 som when the cheapest hostels are 350 som. Location is great, close to the mountain, river, main park, square and bazaar.

  I'm being generous giving this place a 3 star rating. Real generous. But, hey, if you want local flavor and a cultural experience (emphasis on the word experience), give it a shot. You can always move up the road to the Taj Mahal (where I did not stay).
  
  It's an old Soviet era flop house. Some of the rooms have a shower and toilet. Some of them share community facilities, which are OK. Usually. Well, sometimes. Especially if you get in there right after they clean it up.
  
  If you're on the road, the maids will wash your clothes for you for a reasonable price.
  
  Bring them some fresh fruit from the marvelous outdoor market, which is about the minutes from the Altai. That's the best thing about the hotel: it's right in the middle of life!
