The resort arranged for me to be collected from Kisumu airport by their own taxi service, a 2 hour drive through the Homa Bay area for some sight seeing. Arrived at Mbita causeway where the resorts own boat was waiting to take me the rest of the way to the resort. 45 mins later I had my feet on the most beautiful white sand beach I have ever seen. The best bit? I was the only one there so I had the whole place to myself (bar staff/owners). I was greeted with breakfast (I got there at 9am) in the Banda, My bag was taken to my room which was a double. The room had hot/cold water, electric via the 12v solar panels behind the rooms. I do advise if your there longer than a day/night; that you bring booster power packs to charge your electronics. Charge points are being installed soon, Besides being away from the world wide web was refreshing. The food at the resort is prepared by a top Kisumu restaurant chef who has a huge following & to date. THE BEST steak I have ever had. The food was excellent during my stay.
After breakfast I met my guide Dan & we headed off to the local fishing village on the island. On the 2nd day I went fishing for Nile Perch, one of Africa's largest freshwater predators. All the fishing gear/boat/guide was provided by the resort + I brought along my own lures. Along with sight seeing around one of the lakes biggest islands (Mufangano) while fishing, Sadly no nibbles that day; But 1 day for fishing really is not enough TBH.
That afternoon arranged for me was a chance to see traditional fishing with a fine mesh net from the resorts own beach. This gave me a chance to see a small sample of a huge selection of the little known Lake Victoria Cichlids that I know are kept by hobbyists around the world.
I really wish I was able to stay longer & will defiantly be coming back hopefully later this year.
True Lake Victoria Magic is at Takawiri Island.
