Description

INTRODUCTION
• Ngorano location youth group is a community based organisation formed by young people with the aim of addressing issues affecting them.
• It was formed in 2005 by a group of young people who saw the need to come together and help each other in improving their living standards.
• At the beginning the young people held their meetings on an open field where all the group's activities would be carried out.
• Every month each member contributed two hundred shillings,a sum that may seem little but mobilizing young people from the village to get that amount was not an easy task.
• After some time the group started to gain ground and members started contributing six hundred shillings every month.
• With the improvement in finance, members were given small loans with which they used to start small individual businesses.
• Currently, every member contributes one thousand shillings every month.
• The group has extended its operations and has been getting money from the Government's initiated programme of the Youth's Enterprise Fund.
• With this happening the members are making it even bigger. They are now getting into bigger and better investments.
LIVESTOCK PRODUCTION
• Humphrey Wanjohi joined the group in 2007.
• In 2009 he took a loan of 20,000 shillings and bought a heifer.
• Currently he is an established dairy farmer and his aim is to become a breeder.
• He often invites the District's Livestock Production Extension Officer to his farm for evaluation and professional advice on the best practices to ensure maximum production.
• The members too frequently visit his farm and at times lend a hand in the activities within the farm.
• Humphrey can see a great future ahead and as he works hard to make this happen we can conclude that he has already taken his first step.
CARPENTRY
• Before joining the group Wilson Munene Kiboi had a small carpentry business.
• After taking a loan from the group he bought a lathe.
• Now he can make even more furniture and his business is flourishing.
• To him joining the group gave him what would have taken ages to get.
MATATU BUSINESS
• Five years ago Samuel Njuguna would have never dreamt of owning a car but after joining the group and taking a loan the young man bought a motor bike.
• After making some money in the Boda Boda business, he applied for another loan from the group and used the money to buy a Toyota Probox.
• Samuel is now a matatu operator and ferries passenger to and from Karatina town.
BODA BODA BUSINESS
• Samuel Kabechu used to be a bicycle repairer at Kiamariga market.
• He joined the group and took a loan which he used to buy a second hand motor bike.
• Now,Samuel has a new motorbike and by the look of things he is now a happy man.
OTHER BENEFICIARIES
• There are other members who have taken loans from the group and their story is not different.
• One such member is Alice Wairimu.
Though giving loans to members has been the group's major operation there are other activities the members have been involving themselves in;
TREE PLANTING
• The members have established tree nurseries.
• The members work hard to ensure the nursery beds are well taken care of.These activities require a lot of dedication and members are always willing to cooperate.
• The tree seedlings are now being planted in areas where land needs to be reclaimed.
• A good example is the area around the river banks.
• Due to the increase in the human activity along Hombe river it is slowly reclining.
• Charles Mithamo has been using the water from the river to irrigate his farm for more than three decades but now he is a worried man.
• The water that used to flow with so much strength is no longer enough making it harder and harder to rely on the river.
• Charles is an ardent supporter of the group's effort to plant trees and he has invited them to his farm to do so.
• Bethuel Mwaura is a high school teacher who works closely with the goup's members.Currently he is its Resource Manager.
• He is confident that the group's effort to reclaim the land will bear fruits.
POULTRY FARMING
• Because of its involvement in environment conservation, the members got a big boost when the Natural Resource Management[NRM] gave them a grant to start a poultry project.
• The project is also funded by the World Bank.
• The group's contribution to the project is 99,450/=,with the NRM contributing the remaining amount in a project that cost 331,500/=.
Due to the ever growing school of ideas from members the group has identified more areas which they need to explore. To do this effectively the member visit individuals who give them free lessons on how to start their projects. The group had previously tried to invest in bee keeping.Since the project did not do well, the members have paid a local farmer a visit.
• Moses Wachira is a bee keeper. He has 12 beehives and the members of the group have paid him a visit to learn more about bee keeping.
• With advice from farmers like Moses the group members can employ the skills learnt to put their money into even more money generating projects.
• There is something else members of the group get from Moses. He is an experienced Bible teacher and a counsellor.
• Whenever members visit him they are happy to tap the knowledge.
• The information that members get from people like Moses is very important because the members don't just want to get rich in material things but it has always been the members vision to create disciplined individuals who will act as the foundation in building a responsible society.
