  We go there twice a year - once just our family and then again with students for an educational field trip. Incredibly unique and I love the solitude. The hike up to the peak from the rim campsite is tough but worth doing (6 miles round trip). The lava tube caves are very interesting too but you will need a guide and make sure you have more than one light source! The reason for the low rating (3 stars) is for several reasons, but I still recommend going there. It's been disappointing to see fences go up everywhere there, when you are paying park fees and it's a conservancy. Also frustrating to pay those fees and then witness Kikuyu charcoal burners and illegal logging of African Pencil Cedar (Juniperus). The Maasai are very aggressive in demanding high tips (never expressing gratitude) and pushing for other fees such as night guards, firewood, etc. and yet they have not done anything to fix up the campsites. The road up there is terrible but that does keep masses of people away, so I will live with that. You will need to bring your own water or try and buy some from the locals. Same with firewood. Excellent birding up there and camping by the crater we sometimes hear hyena. Have seen Caracal (once!) and hiking to the peak early morning I came across Eland and a Klipspringer. The Great Rift DVD by BBC has a piece on Suswa that is well worth watching!
