Mercy Rescue Trust is a small U.K based charity supporting the daily operations of the baby rescue centre in Kitale, Kenya. Our mission is to rescue and care for abandoned, orphaned and vulnerable babies and children. Every element of the children's care is provided for including food, medical treatment, clothes and education, all within a family style homely environment. We care for the children with the objective of finding solutions to reunite them with their own families. Children who are reunited with their biological families are often only able to do so with our continued support towards their needs. So we continue to fund their education and supply food on a monthly basis, to enable this. We call this our "Home Base Program". We currently have 17 children within this program and they are all attending school. When this is not possible, we find loving local foster families or pursue adoption. Even after the children are fostered, their links with Mercy Rescue Trust remain strong with our own professional social worker ensuring their care and welfare is looked after. In addition to this, we are actively engaged in the local community. We have constructed a place where they can collect water from our borehole and wash their clothes. We have identified some women with young babies who need to work to provide for their family. They are able to leave their babies with us during the day so that they can go to their places of work. During the long holiday we offer activities and lunch for the older children within the community. We can sometimes have up to 60 children turn up. As a small charity, we struggle to find the funding or to have the profile we need to fundraise on a large scale. All of the money comes from dedicated sponsors and fundraising events organised by the trustees and other supporters in their own time. The costs of formula milk and nappies are continuously rising and medical bills can be anywhere from £300 to £3000 per child.
