This is the typical kind of company that will not give you what you expect/hope for. They are budget, which has to be acknowledged, and I don't know if any of the real budget operators out there is any better. But for about 30 - 40USD/day more you get decent companies that will give you good service. Some examples of what happened:
- The safari vehicle was a van instead of a jeep. The company told me that one doesn't need a jeep in dry season. However, we were forced to turn around several times and even cancel one game drive because the car couldn't handle the roads
- The safari vehicle was in a very poor shape. Doors didn't open properly, the roof didn't close properly. Our driver had to jumpstart the car once, after driving "too fast" (70km/h) on the (tarred) road. Another vehicle of the company broke down completely, so we had to take some people of the other group, until they fixed the other car. With these kinds of vehicles there is a considerable risk of break down, costing you time you would like to spend game viewing
- We were promised two morning drives, both were cut short (to only 30 and 60 mins, respectively) because "we had to go and would be late otherwise". When selling the package, the company promised something very different. In hindsight, I must admit that the drives were very long, so it would have been hard to spend more time on the morning drives. But the company should be up front about it.
- When there was a lion in the bush, which was hard to spot, the driver got out of the car and threw a rock at the animal. While we did get a better view, I find this kind of behavior disturbing and unacceptable. A safari company should respect the wildlife and not harass it.
- We were not staying at the same lodges. Therefor, before every game drive, time was wasted to collect all the different people from the different locations, which resulted in less time in the park.
- The driver did not know the parks and current conditions very well, so he often drove into areas the car couldn't handle or that were deserted of animals, which had moved to other spots. A more experienced guide would know these kind of things or get information beforehand from the park officials.
On the positive side:
+ Kenyan nature and wildlife is stunning. It will still be beautiful no matter how poor the performance of you safari company is
+ The lodges were quite high quality. I expected less.
+ Pickup from the respective hotels worked without problems.
+ We were dropped where we were promised on the way back.
+ Punctuality was overall alright (maximum delay of game drives was about 20 minutes).
A word of advice:
Be aware, that a lot of different local companies, will sell you safaris as their own, but will actually not be operating the safari. It took me several hours in different offices, to figure out that this particular safari (which almost every office was offering to me) would be operated by KT. I think one of the best ways to figure out if your dealing with a reputable company is, if they operate their own vehicles and don't take in other people from other offices. (And they should have jeeps)
Overall I still enjoyed my safari a lot. But this was because I saw most of this coming. I had no other booking option, as I was very last minute. So, I expected a lot of the issues I wrote about. But if you book in advance, and expect a well run safari operator (which the google/tripadvisor reviews might led you to believe) you will quite certainly be disappointed.
Amazing trip to Tsavo East. We saw the big 5 in the Safari. Delicious lunch too.
Our tour guide Mr. Dicky looked after us during our trip and ensure our safety.
We will recommend Mr. Dicky to our friends and family.
I was going on a safari for two days and it was a really cool experience!! We have seen many elephants and other kenian animals and had the opportunity to take a lot of nice pictures :)
We had an amazing safari with KT! They were very nice and flexible concerning the booking and everything else. I can warmly reccomend this tour operator if you want to spend some breathtaking, adventurous days in Kenya!
KT safari I can definitely recommend. If you book safari with them, you will not be disappointed. Visit to Amboseli and Tsavo East National Parks exceeded our expectations. Everything we agreed upon with the KT safari was met. Their driver Kenyatta is not only very skillful, but also nice and always smiling. Our tip: If you want to enjoy safari to the full, book your car for yourself. We were only in two and it was perfect.
