Jamaa School began in a small way as Kindergarten School only for Church fellowship members. Then, we had very few members but so many children and because of poverty, most parents in our church did not think it was possible to take their children to a nursery school. I had a sister who trained in Early Childhood Development Program but could not be employed anywhere as there were no Schools and the county government did not have any plans for such people who had trained. Inspired by the plight of the number of orphans we had among us, I took the initiative and rolled out the institution having consulted with the ECD, ministry of education. From Orphans to Vulnerable children and then other parents who were able to pay for service delivery came in. We have never received any help to pay teachers or subordinate staff who cook for the children for their services. I must also appreciate friends who have donated facilities as desks and books in the initial stages. Friends from South Africa do send assistance towards School fees, School uniforms and meals to the Church orphans and vulnerable children. This goes directly to the School for the above.
The School has now embarked on an extension of the school and have started up a building facility that would accommodate upper classes and also be part of dormitory for pupils who may want to board or those who find it hard to learn from home because they may not have relatives to take care of them.
The School has now children of 14years old who sit for Primary Certificate and and proceed to High Schools. We offer quality education and produce good pupils who are not drilled to pass their exams. We have always produced pupils to National and top Provincial Schools who prove their worth in every High School they go.
The challenge we have is how to see the orphans who pass through our hands to high schools continue and successfully achieve their dreams. I have been saddened when I see them and especially the girl child, drop out because of lack of funds.May God bless every heart who go through my experience in Jamaa, meaning my neighbor.We are situated by Nairobi Road, Nyamasaria, Mowlem Akado,500meters from the the main road, and 8Km from the City Center of Kisumu. .
