Bagh Ali Shah Mosque, along with the Makindu Sikh Temple and Makindu Jamia Mosque stand testament to the building of the original Mombasa - Uganda railway, dubbed the Lunatic Express.
Bagh Ali Shah was one of many laborers on the line, and was very popular with his colleagues. Famed for his strength, he used to have the ability to run while carrying a tray of rocks well above his head, making it seem as though the tray was floating above his head from a distance.
Bagh Ali Shah passed away from illness, and was buried at the spot where the mosque today stands. His legend grew as time passed, and a shrine was erected over his grave, attracting peoples of different faiths to this day. There was a time when the old Kenya Railways train, which passes on the rail right outside the mosque, honked as a mark of respect as it rumbled by. Those days are long gone. The Lunatic Express is no more; but the legend remains.
For history buffs: Bagh Ali Shah was one of three brothers. All worked on building the railway, and all passed away at various stages of the line. Bagh Ali at Mackinnon, the second brother at Makindu (grave is across the road from the mosque at the cemetery), and the third breathed his last at Ulu town. Two brothers weren't as famous, so history unfortunately seems to have forgotten their contribution to a vital piece of Kenya's history.response / report this review -
