Very disappointing experience with this company. Unmaintained vehicle and ended up a costly experience. I would recommend a company where you are 100% covered if anything goes wrong (and you are in Africa after all!) - go elsewhere!
Just wanted to give an updated review of our experience with 4x4 Kenya.
We organised with George to hire a Toyota Hilux for 3 weeks in April 2019. Everything was fine in organising and planning with George, we had done extensive research and had been very clear as to our expectations for the vehicle and equipment.
Upon delivery of the car in Arusha, it was discovered that the front windscreen had a large crack in the centre. This was apparently from “hitting a bird” on the drive to transfer the car. We expressed our concern and that it could get worse on the bad tracks in Serengeti etc. George reassured us it would be fine.
There was no paperwork, nor much sense of concern from George in documenting existing damage or problems with the car, we made sure to photograph and list everything.. be very careful of this!!
There were a number of things we requested (equipment) that was not provided, however we decided we could proceed and purchase a few safety things ourselves (Tow rope, water container for camping etc)
About an hour after we left to the Serengeti we discovered a huge issue.. the cigarette lighter point in cab was not working, so no charging phones or able to use GPS etc. This and the broken window was the start of a long list of hassles with a vehicle that had clearly not been maintained properly.
Over 3 weeks we drove through Tanzania, Uganda and back to Kenya. While in Tanzania, the cars wiring under the dash started to smoke very badly. The crack on the front windscreen had also worsened considerably.
We got to Uganda, and needed to replace the front windscreen and fix the wiring, the radiator had also cracked (from an earlier poor repair job on the vehicle) We were unable to get ahold of George so took it upon ourselves to get the vehicle repaired and pay the costs.. in order to not lose days of our holiday and get back on the road. The mechanic did a great job and got everything repaired in a day, for a very reasonable price ($265 USD)
We carried on with our trip It did not stop there, a couple of days later the fridge packed it in also. We by this stage had got hold of George and let him know the situation and the money we had to spend to get the vehicle back on the road. We asked him if he could please refund us the money at the end of the journey, which he readily agreed to. He said he would bring the money when we delivered the car.
We had organised to meet at the Airport on our last day, to return the vehicle. George turned up, hardly even took any notice of the efforts of fixing the car, and proceeded to rudely say that he would not be covering the costs, as it was not his responsibility this is after agreeing to it a few days prior.
Basically he is a dishonest man, who really only cares about money. We had gone far out of our way and beyond what was required with the issues we had, only for him to refuse to cover the small costs we had incurred. He was very rude, with not a word of thanks. He did not even bother to look over the repairs, we had all receipts etc for the work.
To sum it all up, be very cautious if you decide to go ahead with 4x4 Kenya, and be sure to document everything about the vehicle when you pick it up. I would not recommend hiring from this Company.
In fact, please dont!! For your own sake.
We have just finished an amazing 3 week rental with 4x4 Kenya and I strongly recommend them. We rented a Land Rover Defender and drive all over the country visiting various national parks. We saw elephants in Amboseli, Rhinos in Nakuru and Lions in Mara. None of it would be possible without our Defender. There are a LOT of people online and in Kenya who say you need a guide and can't self-drive here or there. We NEVER had a single problem, went wherever we want, saw every animal we hoped to and had a fantastic experience.
The only issue we had with the truck the entire time was that one of the two batteries wouldn't hold a charge. I WhatsApp'd George from 4x4 Kenya and he drove out to the AirBnB we we're staying at and swapped in a new battery right there in our garage. Amazing service.
To clear the air from some of the other reviews, yes, George requires that you pay cash up front for the rental, but he provides a detailed contract and takes a damage deposit on your credit card.
He was very clear about that with us and communications through WhatsApp were fast and detailed. He arranged to come meet us with the vehicle at the airport the night we flew in to Nairobi.
Overall, I'm convinced this is the best way to see this beautiful country. My kids learned so much and the entire three week rental of the Land Rover cost less than what a 4 day Safari with a guide and car would have been.
Note: I rely on online reviews a lot to make it trip plans, so in the interest of giving back to the community I am cross posting this on Trip Advisor as well
Always be carefull with your deposit!!!
Last year in december I rented a car at 4x4-Kenya in Nairobi City Center, Tom Mboya Street.
They charge the deposit for the car to my credit card, but they never give it back to me. Even when I 've sent them an eMail to return the deposit back to my account, there was no answer!!!
Always make sure, to have something in written at the end about the deposit!!!
Don't hire a car from this company. It didn't turn up despite confirmation the night before. Then I could not get hold of them - they would not answer my calls. I missed my engagement as a result
We have recently had our second experience with 4x4-kenya car hire, and, as in the first time, the assistance and service were simply perfect!! This company is well suited for people who want to enjoy the experience of a self-drive safari because it guarantees a high-level support from all points of view. The car was a Land Rover Defender in pretty good conditions with both a roof tent and hatch on top, thus ensuring the best view of animals and security at night. The car was well equipped for camping and unpredictable emergencies (first aid, mechanical tools for the car, additional tank for fuel) . The 4X4-kenya manager, Mr. George, was kindly available to help us in organizing the trip (shopping, money change, ecc.) and in assisting us during all time. Last but not least, the rate is quite convenient given the quality of the offered service!!! We warmly suggest this small but very efficient local company to everyone. Enjoy Africa!!!
