Delicious meal, and we really enjoyed it, however it was not worth waiting 2 hours in the sun. Was fun to sit at the bench and watch them cooking.
Fantastic food, traditional udon accompanied by great tempura, very friendly service plus fee dessert :) :) wouldn't mind coming back every day!
Nice udon, but always have to wait too long
Waited an hour and half with a high expectation based on all the reviews. And I have to say, my personal experience was unfortunately far different from anything I'd seen.
I chose here over Okataki because when I did my research I found their udon, based on Sanuki style, focuses on the texture and quality of noodle while Okataki, based on Kyoto style, focuses on soup. (correct me if I'm wrong, but regardlessly) I wanted to experience chewy thick noodle. I had a curry udon and original udon. However, the noodle seemed to be overcooked - it was neither chewy, bouncy nor firm. It actually seemed to carry too much moisture. The fries were pretty normal, but they should've been better to compensate for the long queue. The broth was salty, and the curry was normal, not rich nothing special.
I'm sure this place gained its' fame for a reason but I can't really speak for beyond my experience, and I can't be more generous than giving it two stars for what it offered me.
Delicious. Very traditional place. One of the best restaurants that I found in Japan. You may have to wait outside to be seated (20-30 minutes) but the staff help you to order beforehand.
Worth the wait. The udon is amazing. My wife had the udon with chicken tempura. The chicken was so tender an juicy. I had the udon with burdock which was also done in tempura batter. The star of the meal hands down the bowl of udon. Highly recommend this place. To top it off for dessert they dished out a light custard dish which was the perfect was to end the meal!! Staff was super friendly!!
We can call it, the best udon in Kyoto. We got there around 2pm. We thought it's not lunch time anymore so no need to wait in line. However, we were wrong. Lots of people wait there around this time. We wait there like around an hour to get seats. It's worth to wait in an hour to get these delicious dishes! You have to try burdock tempura bowl牛蒡丼飯(there is a raw yolk inside the bowl) so good and very tasty! The yolk perfectly combines with rice! High recommend!
The chief and waitresses are very polite. They even serve hot tea when we wait outside of the store.
Waited in line forever. They take your order while you are in line. They have an English menu which was very helpful. Really enjoyed the food.
Love the food. Given that you have the patience to wait for hours in line. Moreover, it's popular all the time throughout it's business hours during peak travel seasons.
Worth the waiting! We had a late lunch at 4pm so we only waited for 5 minutes but otherwise you need to wait for half an hour. Very good traditional food and the staff is very friendly!! Number one MUST GO in Kyoto. (Only lunch)
