Guinness Record Holder as the largest bronze buddha in the world. It is 120 metres high. The toe alone is the height of the average adult. There is a small museum of sorts inside it. You need to take your shoes off going in and carry them with you in a plastic provide they provide.
You can currently only go up to the level of the lotus flower upon which the buddha stands. There is a small viewing deck there. Free in over New Years: on January 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Nice grounds around the statue as well as a small zoo out back, which currently has a baby alpaca.response / report this review -

Decent place to visit for half a day. Going up the statue was worth only for 3000 gold statues of Buddha which costs an extra 300 yen over the 500 entry fee to the park and to the base of the statue. Late night transportation might be an issue unless you have your own vehicle.

Impressive Buddha, it's really to see it but I would say that's not a must have to see.
First you'll probably go from Tokyo, so you'll have to pay the ticket until Ushiku and wait around 1h. Then arriving at Ushiku, you'll have to wait the bus going to the Buddha (1 per hour), around 1h again and it's super expensive.
Arriving there, you'll have to pay an extra for entering in the Buddha. It's apparently nice to see it during spring because there are cherry trees. You have also a little lake with a lot of carps that you can feed for 100¥.
You can enter in the Buddha even if you're in a weelchair. The ground floor is very weird, extremely modern (photo with the lights). Then the next floors are :
- A little museum about the construction and the maintenance of the Buddha.
- A religious place where you can dedicate a short gold Buddha.
- A very very very small point of view
- Finally a shop.
So I don't recommend it, excepted if for you this Buddha have a religious importance, or if you're not concerned about money and time, or if you really want see the biggest Buddha of Japan :)response / report this review -

Far place to go without car, but if you come around, take a walk around the countryside. I think walking around nearby villages is the best thing about this statue.

Amazing statue outside and inside. You can almost see the statue everywhere you drive. The negative thing is the transportation to get there. Bus run on the hour or longer.

Tallest Buddha status in Ibharaki prefecture. We can see Tokyo sky tree and tower from here. If you are planning from Tokyo you can plan along with Hitachi Seaside Park trip.
