Good place for children to learn about primates in Oita. Entrance fee is 600 Yen but top up 100 Yen to take the monorail up to the hill. Large area to snap pictures and get up close to the critters. There are 3 gangs of macaques up there, totalling 1600 on that hill! Watch your belongings as they can get pretty snappish if you get too close. Children will enjoy this place but supervision is recommended. Legend says that if a macaque crosses your path between your legs, lady luck will smile on you.

I love this place. Its a very small zoo. Literally just a walk up the hills. But it cheap and you get to see the monkeys up close. Some of them would literally walk right pass you. And if you want to spend a little more time exploring there's an aquarium right across the street.

If hanging out with monkeys sounds fun, look no further than Takasakiyama. The mountain will satisfy your cravings for the furry critters. For most, one visit will suffice.

Fun little place to visit. The monkeys are so close to you they are stepping on your feet. When I went there they were feeding the monkeys which was fun to watch. There were also lots of little baby monkeys which was fun. This place is also surprising kid friendly.

I very much like the idea of the open space where animals are not caged, especially in comparison with other wild-life centres I've seen in Japan, where animals were so squeezed that they could hardly move. Here, the monkeys move around freely, even though it's obvious they're used to the presence of humans. I expected a bigger space and more "nature" (even here, there is a lot of artificial stuff, concrete pavements and hills, etc.).

A great way to see wildlife in a "natural" habitat. Although the park does feed the monkeys, none of them are caged or domesticated. You can tel they are used to humans, but if you get too close they will challenge you. I enjoyed watching them groom and play and fight a bit. It was spring when we went so there were plenty of adorable babies to see.

Takisakiyama is the best thing ever. I thought it would be a lot of monkeys in cages, but oh no. I was wrong. They are everywhere. Feeding times are the best. The park itself isn't that big but it's awesome! And pretty cheap! Parking is ¥410 and entrance fee is ¥510 or less. Check the website. I'd spend at least 1hour in the park. See the feeding a couple times.
Then go across the bridge to the gift shop. They have good Beppu and monkey gifts. Plus the blueberry ice cream on the 2nd floor is to DIE FOR.
Cheap outing , kid friendly! ( unless your kids like running away from you and touching everything. Not a good idea.
