It was such a lovely place this traditional inn. The room was incredibly spacious and it felt very private. You have the main room with a nice low table to sit (have some complimentary green tea and a biscuit) and the bedroom was set up nicely with extra blankets since it was already getting cold in early December.
The toilets are shared which is a minus (and there are very small). But it was a minor inconvenience for us, since we truly enjoyed the space, the food - both breakfast and dinner were delicious and filling- and the experience of a traditional ryokan.
Bare in mind that they are strict with serving time, so no late wake up (7:30am breakfast) and arrive for checking in on time (6pm dinner).response / report this review -

Wonderful! This was without question our favourite stay on our 3-week tour of Japan. The house is a traditional ryokan and surprisingly large inside! We had our own private tea room and separate bedroom, which was great for getting into our yukuta’s and having a beer before dinner. The set meal at dinner was a huge spread, looked beautiful and was delicious! Breakfast was served in the same manner and was also excellent. The traditional wooden baths are really nice and a great place to relax after dinner. The beds were traditional futon on tatami mats, and extremely comfortable. Service was perfect and the staff really friendly. All in, an unbeatable traditional experience and exceptional value for money.

Magome is a beautiful village at the start (or end!) of the Nakasendo trail. Tajimaya guest house was amazing - very friendly and owners try very hard to make the overseas guests feel welcome, including encouraging participation in a cultural dance and song after a truly superb dinner. Our family of 5 stayed here, and has been voted #1 in our travels in Japan 😊.
A lot of people start the walk from Magome to Kiso without spending the night - I can recommend this place and felt it was well worth indulging in before setting out the next morning on the trail.
Aside from the Tajimaya guest house, the people at the visitors center were great, the post office staff were so friendly (they also have an ATM) and the tea house and souvenir shop (that sells locally produced wooden items) were fantastic. We bought a wooden wash bucket same as used in Tajimaya and had no problem bringing it back into Australia through customs.
It is a steep hill if you are dragging suitcases up from the bus stop - there is also a bus stop up the top so you can also walk downhill (found that out too late!).
We sent our luggage on to Kiso via tourist center ¥500 per bag - drop off by 11am and pick up at Kiso by 5pm.
Can't wait to go back - so beautiful 😍. BTW - we organized all Travel ourselves rather than go through walking companies - it was easy enough - contacted the accommodations via phone- paid cash each night. Use HYPERDIA to check train/bus times.response / report this review -

Located right in the middle of the beautifully preserved post-town of Magome. The building itself is gorgeous and full of history. Rooms were spacious and comfortable with traditional tatami mats floors, kotatsu, and futons to sleep on, which were super comfortable. Both dinner and breakfast came with generous portions of local cuisine and were very delicious. The host himself provided us with some history about the place itself and kiso valley and gave us the chance to participate in the traditional song and dance of the area after dinner. He was very helpful with all of our questions and made our stay really memorable! An absolutely great place to stay in Magome.

Cosy inn on the Nakasendo trail. Large spread and variety of local foods for dinner, and a welcome song by the Master of Tajimaya (join in!! 😝).

Excellent Minshuku, propre. Les gens sont très gentil et on y mange très bien. On s'est régalé! Il est aussi idéalement situé pour faire la randonnée Nakasendo. Sanitaires et salle de bain commune.
