Rather than tasting or touching something inside the premises, time is better spent to see, hear and smell the scenery and to capture free images and videos outside. i have been to the place a couple of times and have not tired of going there. The experience I got and the company I felt on each occasion were different!

The Owaku-dani Valley is regularly sold as part of a tour around the Hakone area which might include a ride on the rope-way and a short cruise on the lake. As part of a package, it is a decent stop for a good vintage point to view Mt. Fuji (if visible) and a bit of sulphur vent activities (in the distance) and the ubiquitous souvenir shopping. The famous black eggs is well worth a try but don't be put off by the colour as it tastes just like a normal hard boiled egg. If you are planning to come here expecting to see bubbling mud pools or geysers then you will be disappointed. I don't know if these are available elsewhere in the general area but it is certainly not obvious if you are a tourist just pop out of the rope-way terminal.

The eggs and the photo opportunities are worth it. Not sure about the gift shop. Didn't try the restaurant (cafeteria-like). Bottom floor probably good for school science field trips.

Nice stop on the hakone loop! Black eggs are a tourist money grab The same as a regular boiled eggs if you like odd colored eggs, Come get some brown tea boiled eggs in Taiwan :) all taste the same

Huge souvenir shop with lots of selection but hoooooooooooly is it packed. Black eggs sell out early and the lineup is pretty insane so plan accordingly.

Owakudani is a quick ride on the ropeway and worth a visit for the views and the black eggs. There is a constant frenzy of tourists but somehow one manages to look past this when looking at the unusual landscape of volcanic activity, mountains streaked with sulfer, and steam rising everywhere. There are also great views of Mount Fuji on a clear day while you eat your eggs. Don't let the long queues to buy them put you off as they move fairly quickly. I only wish that the ropeway would run even just one hour later as it felt quite rushed. Although everyone says Hakone is an easy day trip from Tokyo, it's actually quite difficult to do unless you leave ridiculously early or if you only want to see one thing. If I could do it again I would stay one night because there is plenty to do in the area.

The volcanic gasses coming out of the side of the mountain were pretty awesome. It reminds me a little about Yellowstone. Very tourist centered.

Don't bother with the Geo-museum. It's only one small room with a few displays. No English explanations on any of the signs. Even if you can read Japanese it's not worth the entry fee. Views from the observation areas a amazing, we went on an overcast day though which did make it less interesting. The cable car trip through the fog was eerie.
