Worth visiting twice – once during daylight and once in the dark. It becomes a totally different experience. But don't be an ass and take pictures where you're not supposed to.

奥の院の入り口からの参道からは杉の巨木と数多くの慰霊碑や墓が並んでおり、その数と規模の大きさに驚かされます。歴史上の有名人のみならず、阪神淡路大震災や国内の大手企業の労災等で殉職された方々の慰霊碑が印象的でした。

【世界文化遺産】奥の院は、一の橋から弘法大師空海が眠る御廟までの約２キロほどの浄域・聖域で、僧侶だけでなく参拝者は弘法大師に空海に会う前に際し、必ずここで身心を整え一礼して入場します。 一の橋から奥の院までの参道の両側には何百年もの時を経た老杉がそびえ立ち、幻想的かつ神秘的な荘厳さを身をもって体感できます。 御廟の橋を渡るとより聖域となり、写真撮影はおろか脱帽しなければなりません。

祈親上人が献じた祈親燈、白河天皇が献燈の「白河燈」が一千年来燃え続けている御廟前にあるお堂。万燈が堂を埋めて静かに揺らめき、幽玄な趣が心に迫ってきます。
