Highly recommend this place to everyone who’s interested at traditional housings of Japan. The staffs in this open air museum are also incredibly friendly and helpful. A nice lady told me they actually have the houses from other regions of Japan dissembled, shipped here and then reassembled them at the location.
The museum gathered old housings from many regions of Japan but the most famous, and also my personal favorite are the ones from the Shirakawa Go region.
It almost feels like you are walking in a fairly tale when you are walking among those houses.
The ticket is 500 yen, and there are both parking lots for cars and motorcycles.response / report this review -

Widest array of traditional Japanese houses in the country．Great place to learn about the lifestyles of Japanese farmers from more than two centuries ago. The staff are friendly, too.

If you want to see some traditional Japanese houses and buildings, but you don't have time to stray far from Tokyo, this is a great place to visit. There are a good variety of buildings here.

Interesting place. Some houses are currently being restored so the pathways are not very accessible to the handicapped & ppl with mobility problems. There are volunteers who man the different houses. The lady in the picture is one of them. She made exquisite grasshoppers from grass.

Highly recommend! One of the highlights of my trip to the Tokyo area. Very nice museum, and there are volunteers in some houses that keep the fire and you can talk to. Very nice people!

Nice selection of buildings. During weekends volunteers keep the fireplace running in some of the houses and are ready to answer questions.

Kabuki Stage constructed in the past which has a round stage that can be turned manually by people underneath the stage. The entrance to underground structure is from the backside of the building where you can view how the stage can be turned.
