THE tourist attraction that is holding Hikone city together. On its own, the castle Tower, museum, and Genkyuu-en are not particularly extraordinary(you could feel the Tenshukaku is more exciting than other castles because of its steep ladder) but combined they provide a good day's entertainment for any family. I'd say, for a tourist spot of its size the place is not foreigner friendly, but as it is a historic site you can manage without hands-on foreigner guidance. Five star location in Kansai, I would recommend it to anyone who has already toured some of the other famous places like Osaka, Kyoto and Himeji and has another day to spend.

One of the few preserved (not rebuilt) castles in Japan. Lovely wooden interiors. Careful: the steps are extremely steep, almost like a ladder but somehow more difficult to use, and there's a lot of stairs inside the building. The way up to the building is also pretty steep. The surrounding garden is beautiful, but also has some paths that are relatively steep. But if steep doesn't scare you, this is a very nice castle to visit, and it has an extremely cool mascot with a jingle that won't get out of your head for weeks.

Beautiful, but small original castle with great views over the city. It is extremely crowded on weekends and there is a wait to slowly get to the top. Signage in English is limited to the grounds only. Signage and artifacts inside are minimal, so the reason to go through the castle is for views, which are partially obscured through fingerprinted and scratched polycarbonate windows. A bit pricey at 1000¥ for the castle, grounds, and gallery. (The museum is an additional 500¥.) Definitely still worth the visit for castle lovers.

Really enjoyed Hikone castle. It is quite a hike uphill once you enter the grounds. Nice garden as well we has the unfortunately occurrence of visiting the weekend of culture day holiday and there was a 2 he wait to get to the top. Very nice views of the surrounding area.

Do you know Hikonyan? She is a "kawaii" cute cat of Hikone and Hikone castle, one of the most authentic castles in Japan. Don't worry you can not visit there because it is too far from your home. You can receive lovely new year's greeting card from her if you send your own ahead to the address of this castle at every year end. I guess cards from overseas are not problem. But be careful because she doesn't understand foreign language very well. I think English is the best choice to get her love.

This is one of the original castle in Japan, listed as one of the national treasure.
This castle is beautiful although it's size is small.
The view from this castle is stunning too, you won't miss it.
There is english pamphlet given at the entrance.

Beautiful castle with a very large garden. The keep itself is quite small but the interior woodwork is fantastically intricate. The view is nothing too squander either.

Japanese castles are always majestic built on the hill top, and protected from attacks. Each one has its own amazing history, and I even performed Misogi (spirit cleansing) Jo-Kata here on the ground.

The castle is lovely and a bit different from other Japanese castles. From the upper storeys you have a great view over lake Biwa. It is worth a visit. And do not forget to go to the garden which is included in the entrance fee; it's quite nice, too.
