I read somewhere that "Italians eating out would order a starter (antipasto), a pasta dish (primo), a main meat or fish dish (secondo) with vegetable side dish (contorno), then dessert (dolce)".

So even though it was lunch hour, after being transported to Milan upon entering Cova (Tokyo) located in urban Marunouchi, one simply has to honour tradition and have the (businessman) lunch course.

Cova looks and feels like a traditional Italian cafe, and a meal there is an offer you can't refuse ;)

The customary bread basket quickly arrived, and consumed with gusto (partly also to move the meal on!) and the proffered antipasti was consumed "in jaws of steel" (apologies to Sauron in the Battle of Morannon).

You get a choice of drinks with the course, and I had the Peach Champagne mix (No beer!).

The pasta was certainly traditional and did not disappoint - I would have gladly had a generous serving by itself in another time.

We had taken one fish and one meat dish to share, and both were very well done - the fish expertly blended with seasonal vegetables and the beef spot on medium rare that I could cut with my fork.

The best of Japanese ingredients done the Italian way - buon appetito!

Dessert was a special treat, and un caffè (nothing with milk after breakfast!) the perfect digestive.

It was indeed a bit of an indulgence, not only in the food but also the course price - which would average about 2x ~ 3x a regular salaryman bento lunch. But that would not me a fair comparison - for indeed we had our moneys worth, a full tummy and more memories of a special albeit short time.

So after this Italian job, it was back to the Japanese one

    Recommended!

Cova is a chain from Milan now owned by LVMH, Nanri San,
the lady who owns this is lovely and very international with a penchant for the Middle East and hence it has become the de facto hang out of Middle Easterners who visit Tokyo and stay at the surrounding hotels . A secret room shows pictures of a number of notable and royal Arabs. The coffee is excellent and the sweets are impeccablefood menu hasn't changed in two decades but is consistent and perfectly adequate and they are handicapped by a tiny kitchen. Great place for al fresco coffee and sandwiches as you watch the world go bysadly they have had to ban smoking on outdoor areas which almost brought me to tears. The location is excellent and is brings a taste of Italy/Europe to the beginning of a very stylised street which is littered on both ends with designer retail, great for quiet dates !

One of the old school venues from the older era of this otemachi / ginza / hibiya area. The cafe/restaurant itself inside is rather dated - probably needs to take a leaf from the Cova cafe outlets in Hong Kong for an idea on updating

however it has a good sized pavement seating area and makes for an ideal client coffee / sweet meeting venue and late afternoon it can make for an 'easy to talk' spot outside for a glass of vino etc - additionally as its opposite the Peninsula hotel its is to suggest the venue to people unfamiliar with Tokyo

Good for the outdoor space and reasonably priced drinks / sweets though the inside decor is looking dated
