There wasn't that much people when I visit but I guess part of reason is because this place is so big so it won't be that crowded.
It is peaceful,but not my favorite temple in Kyoto.response / report this review -

The most worth 600Yen admission fee. The temple/shrine was beautiful with the reflection from the pond. The museum (included with fee) is one of the best. This is a must visit in Uji or even Kyoto. Take the JR line from Kyoto, it’s cheaper

A stunning temple a short train journey south of Kyoto. The symmetric main building is featured on the 10 yen coin. The entrance fee includes access to the museum which houses some really stunning Buddhist artefacts and is well worth seeing. For a separate fee you can visit the inside of the main building as part of an about 15 minute tour (in Japanese only). You purchase a ticket for a timed entry and when I visited we had to wait about 50 minutes before our time. Probably it's not really worth paying to see the inside.
If possible I'd recommend visiting in the morning when the sun will be behind you when photographing the main building as the lighting was challenging when I visited in the afternoon.response / report this review -

Amazing place to see some of Japan's national treasures. Pictures were not allowed. There is a pair of Phoenix that were meticulously crafted over a thousand years ago. Another national treasure was a seated statue of Amitabha Tathagata built with wood and gold. This Buddha statue would baffle today's engineers. I highly suggest a visit to this special place to see even more artifacts from Japanese history.

This was such a beautiful and serene temple to visit. It definitely became the highlight of my visit to Uji. Admission is ¥600, but entering the Phoenix Hall, the main temple, costs an additional ¥300. This is a 20 minutes tour guided in Japanese, but you can get an English description of everything that the guide says during the standard tour.
Included in the admission fee is a small museum showing and expanding on explanations of some of the decorations and details in the main temple's architecture, which I found quite beautiful.response / report this review -

This random stop turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip. We got lucky because it wasn't too crowded. The landscaping is beautiful and it was very peaceful.

Definitely worth the visit if you're in Uji. Even during the high season, this temple is a lot more serene than others in Kyoto. Put aside some time for the fancy museum they have inside. They also have a small wisteria garden that is usually in bloom right after the sakura season (end of April).

You must visit Byodo-in temple and the museum when in Uji. The architecture of the temple itself surrounded by water is beautiful on its own, but there is also a special tour for the inside of the temple in order to see the buddha (you must get a separate ticket earlier as it is usually an hour wait) as well as the museum. The museum explains the architecture, history and the religious aspect of Byodo-in that is accessible to foreigners as well.
