A small Ryokan in Matsudai with natural hot spring baths. Not sure how I came to book here, but was looking for somewhere near the Tokomachi art fields as we were staying the following night at the House of Light. Booking was a little troublesome as forms were in Japanese, but managed with the help of Google translate. We booked a Japanese style room (futons rather than western beds) with an outside private bathtub. The staff will collect you from Matsudai station at 15:20 if you book in advance - well worth doing as quite a way from the station to the Ryokan. On arrival we were offered a choice of yukata for our stay, given tea and shown to our room. The room was lovely, and the bath outside was great to sit in even though there was snow on the ground. We booked a sake tasting course to have with dinner (we shared one between 2 of us as not sure we'd like it) and it was great. Food was lovely, showed off the local and seasonal produce beautifully. We left dinner feeling very full. Breakfast was also plentiful, gorgeous to look at and very tasty. Staff were wonderfully friendly, some spoke more English than others, but was never a problem. Can't recommend enough if you want to spend a relaxing night in the hills near Tokamachi. It's only a couple of hours from Tokyo and a massive change of pace.

Lovely little ryoken up in the mountains near Matsudai, really enjoyed our stay - we chose a traditional Japanese room with futon, I believe they also have a room or two with western beds. Our room had a private outdoor onsen on the balcony, there's also a public (natural source) onsen in the basement. The service was excellent - very warm and friendly, and the evening and breakfast meals were beautifully presented and very tasty! We enjoyed a sake tasting course too. Highly recommended!

市街地からアクセスの悪い場所にある温泉街だが、この宿は利き酒師（尚且つソムリエ）の支配人が丁寧にお酒を吟味してくれる、新潟の地酒を楽しむのに最高の宿。支配人は若くてイケメン。女性客が多い。地元で採れる季節の食材をふんだんに使った料理も繊細で女性客なら間違いなく楽しめる。デザートのアイスに追加料金でレミー・マルタンをかけることができるのが憎い演出。
温泉は小さいながらも露天がある。景色は川沿いの木々を眺めることができてとても良い。

昔ながらの温泉宿をリノベーションした感はありますが、食事とお酒のラインナップが素晴らしい。特に日本酒好きなら堪りません。温泉も、湯加減は熱めなものの、湯上がりがさっぱりする湯疲れしないいいお湯で、流石三大薬湯と呼ばれるだけあります。

リピーターです。日本酒が100酒類も置いてあり、利き酒師の方がチョイスしてくれます。そして、お料理が最高に美味しい！こじんまりとしているので、騒がしくなくとっても落ち着けます。温泉ものんびり入れて、疲れを癒せます。

プレゼンテーションにも凝った地元の野菜料理が美味。日本酒の種類が豊富。温泉も効きそうな感じ。

A great ryokan to stay. The food is great and the collection of Japanese sake and wine is great. Here they do not "sell" you something about sake but "tell". After staying there you will know which present to bring home to your family or friends.
