Nice house, great food, good service. The toilet and bathroom are very clean. A bit far from bus terminal and onsen (15 mins walk) but it doesn't matter.

This deserves at least a 4-star rating. The proprietress is a one-woman show - she cooks, cleans and welcomes guests all on her own and still able to keep the place running well!
It's true she communicates mainly in Japanese but if you choose to stay there, you're pursuing traditional Japanese living after all. To be fair, she articulates basic English such as the times for dinner, breakfast, check-in/out and lights out. That's all you really need to know; other details such as what to see and do in Shirakawa-go can be easily found online.
Overall, I enjoyed my stay and learnt what it felt authentic; something to try once in a lifetime (or a few times in a lifetime if you're the adventurous type :P)

Wonderful stay! Really warm and welcoming host/owner, who goes above and beyond to ensure we have a nice stay. She doesn't speak English and would just speak to you in Japanese with a lot of gesture, but be adventurous and go out of your linguistic comfort zone, use gesture and mix English - Japanese wordings, and both parties would understand each other. We stayed in the cold days of February, and to our surprise, the house was really warm considering how old and traditional it is.
The room is tatami floor, and futon bedding will be laid out for you while you're having dinner in the common dining room. The common dining room even has the traditional sunken hearth (irori)! Upon arrival, you will be welcomed by pre-heated room, a low table with a big thermos of hot tea and wafer. The village has wifi (another surprise) which is very stable for usage in Nodaniya.
Dinner and breakfast are included in the room rate, which makes it a great value for money. And there's Hida beef in the dinner set menu, a lavish set menu at that!
Again, the house is really charming, as long as you're looking and expecting a stay in an old traditional house. No fancy shmancy and the toilet gets cold in the winter. Tips for winter, try and set your gas heater to longer hours before you hit the bed so it doesn't ring every 3 hrs and wake you up.
We came by car and it snowed overnight during our stay so our tiny little m***a Passo was burried in the snow. When we were leaving, without even bother asking about payment, oba-san (the host) was more concerned about getting us ready to leave and even helped us clearing the snow from on and around our car. We had a fun snow-cleaning session with oba-san! :D

At the south end of town it's far from the onsen and main entrance BUT right across from the doboroku museum!
Great food, warm friendly service and quaint surroundings. It's showing it's age and the walls literally are paper thin and that's the attraction of these local minshuku!

Check in hours are only possible 2 hrs (3 to 5). We arrived 3.30 and had to wait for a while/roam around for someone to come out as no one was in the counter. The lady was overall nice but she only showed us the room and toilets, and told us dinner was at 6, then suddenly left to pick up the phone and didn't come back. She didn't speak english. It was the less warm welcome I had in Japan. The hotel has a shared bathroom and very very basic amenities. The room is Japanese style with tatami but being this one my fourth tatami style room this one was the worse and the "mattress" was way too thin even for tatami mattress. You can only shower from 6 to 9 (but dinner is at six). When we checked in we told her we weren't staying for breakfast as we were leaving early, when we paid she signalled the price and said no breakfast and I was like oh great she's gonna offer as a discount but then she didn't which I thought quite mean given that we told her as soon as we checked in. The dinner was edible (OK) but nothing special, mostly veggies, rice, an entire small fish and a few slices of beef and two small slices of orange. Very poor for 186 USD. Shirakawa go is still incredible though!

This is not one of my shortlisted choice at Shirakawa-go as other more popular ryokan in that area are fully booked so they recommended me this. I was kind of worried at 1st but luckily me and my family aren't that disappointed.
Only one old lady take care of us during the stay, preparing the meals, bath and the beds. We are the only one staying there so even though the small bathroom is shared, it doesn't matter. But i can't imagine how she can manage if her house is full of other guests.
The food is nice especially the breakfast. We love it.
Room are spacious, comfortable and has a nice old house smell. But the room can feel a bit cold even though there is heater.
Bathroom is dark and old, guest may not be used to it. I kind of like it but not my wife. Old lady will prepare the hot wafer in bathtub and covered it by wooden planks waiting for us to use at the specific time we request for bath.response / report this review
