Very cool and interesting place. I bought edible insects here -- a local tradition which was so cool. Vendors were very kind even if you didn't buy anything. The food was also super delicious.

We can see Japanese traditional buildings.
From 150 years it is 400 years before the Warabuki roof building.
The preservation state is very good.

Long row of old Japanese inns, now converted to restaurants and souvenir shops. Traditional foods of the region and plenty of old-time atmosphere. Probably not much English spoken here, but you aren't likely to get this far into the sticks without Japanese ability or at least a Japanese friend.

Traditional village. Totally touristic now, it's a shopping mall in disguise :) I wished there were more real houses with families, minshuku, ryokan, artisans than just shops.

Good place to see the old buildings of Japan still intact. Good restaurants around. Transport is a bit of a problem.

Traditional Japanese thatched roof village.

It's pretty out of the way from everything but worth a visit, especially in the snow! (They have a winter light up festival in February)

Also, it's easier to visit and more stuff to see nearby in Fukushima than Shirakawa-Go in Gifu Prefecture. That said, yes, it is a mini version and the observation point doesn't go as high up and give you the same view as Shirakawa-Go but you get to see everything in reasonable detail - not a bad tradeoff.

Less people here too so that might be a good point for those who want to play around with their cameras.

Shops are mostly limited to soba with a few serving local sake and a cafe.
