Qasr al-Hallabat began as a Roman frontier fort and underwent subsequent modifications and expansions. After the earthquake of 551 AD, the fort was reconditioned to serve as a Ghassanid palace and monastery.
The Umayyad rulers in turn took over the complex and again refurbished it to serve as a royal meeting place with the dessert Bedouin tribes to ensure their loyalty. The Umayyads reused the monastic core of the Qasr as service rooms, and built a magnificent mosque just outside the palace. The nearby baths of Hammam as-Sarah are part of this complex.
When you visit this desert palace, you will notice loads of Greek inscribed black basalt stones. They are part of a stone cut copy of the Imperial Edict of Anastasius of Byzantium. The blocks were brought from near Umm al-Jimal after the 551 AD earthquake destroyed the structure were the edict was originally displayed. The blocks are exhibited in the visitor's center with many more still on the palace walls.
Qasr al-Hallabat has been nicely restored by the Spanish Archaeological Mission and today is a fascinating place to explore with little ones letting imagination roam free. Be sure though that they are supervised as there are deep cisterns and exposed stairs. It is not a good idea to climb over the walls and the mosaics still in situ should be admired but left undisturbed.
The visitor's center has a very nice site museum (opens Sun-Thu 9 am - 1 pm, but if locked, ask for it to be opened). There are restrooms too.

Qasr al-Hallabat is located 25 km northeast of Zarqaa and north of the paved road that connects the city of Zarqa to the Blue Oasis. It is believed that its early beginnings date back to the Nabataean period and that it represented in this period a commercial station.
Far away
QASR HALLABAT is perfectly situated on a small hill 30km east of Zarqa. It is considered as one of the most elaborate of the “Desert Castles”. A Roman fort was built on this site in the second century to guard the desert frontier, and parts of it still survive. It is just beautiful and I highly recommend visiting the site.
منطقة شبه صحراوية ذات مناخ صيفي جميل جدا خصوصا ليلا
