  Not much of the structure left, you have to use your imagination. No shade.
  
  Awesome views over the dead sea. 5-10 minute walk from the car park.
  
  Lots of caves to explore below the plateau.
  
  Had the place to myself - a couple of others were heading over as I was leaving.

  It's part of Christian pilgrimage places in Jordan, related to the decapitation of John the Baptist, not far from Dead sea nor Ma'en natural hot baths where Herodotus the great used to treat himself, the zone is extremely magnificent, many interesting trails and suitable accommodation in Madaba 35km from the fortress

  Excellent place of historical and biblical relevance! Far away, but easy to get to. The walk up to the palace is nice. There could be more historical markers and explanation. Official time is 8-4, but we arrived at 10:30 and it was just opening.

  The place where John the Baptist was imprisoned and beheaded. A true piece of history. Castle was destroyed by an earthquake in the 1900s so all that is left of it is its ruins. There's quite a fair bit of walking to do to get to the top of the hill but it's definitely worth it! Lovely scenic view of the dead sea as well.

  Small ruins on the top of a hill. The ruins are ok. The view of the Dead Sea is spectacular.

  عمر بويغراضن
  يقع"جبل مكاور" في جبل بني حميدة على مسافة تقارب الثلاثين كيلو مترا في الجهـة الجنوبية الغربية من مادبا وعلى مسافة واحد وسبعين كيلو مترا من عمان. ويمكن أن نرى بقايا قلعة مكاور على قمة إحدى التلال. وقد بنيت القلعة عام 90 قبل الميلاد على يد القائد "الإسكندر جانيوس ".
  
  ويرتفع جبل مكاور عن سطح البحر مايقارب من 750 مترا ، وبالتالي فهو يرتفع عن سطح البحر الميت حوالي 1125 مترا ، وتحيط بهذا الجبل المخروطي الشكل ، التلال ، والهضـاب ، والوديان ، والكهوف ، إضافة إلى وقوعه بين مناطق زرقاء ماعين ، ووادي الهيدان ، وشرقي البحر الميت .
  
  وفي هذه القلعة ألقى هيرود يوحنا المعمدان في السجن ، وفيها رقصت سالومي الجميلة مما جعل هيرود يأمر بقطع رأس "يوحنا المعمدان" عام 30 ميلادية وتقديمه هدية لها على طبق. وقد تم تدمير أجزاء كثيرة من هذه القلعة على أيدي الرومان.
  
  وبقيت المنطقة منسية من القرن التاسع الميلادي لمدة عشرة قرون ، إلى أن تم إعادة إكتشافها عام 1964 م من قبل البعثة الفرنسـيسـكانية ، وبعد زيارة البابا للأردن في عام م2000 ، قرر الفاتيكان إختيار "مكاور"مكانا معتمدا للحج المسيحي .
  
  وفي مكاور يشاهد الزائر منظرا بالغ حدود الروعة ، إذ ينبسط أمام ناظريه البحر الميت والجبال المحيطة بالقدس.
