Great mosaic on the ground. You can see a baptism chamber in the rear. Good restoration.
This is the main church of the complex comprising the Petra Church, the Blue Church and the Ridge Church.
The Petra Church has a tripartite basilica measuring 26 x 15 meters with three inscribed apses and three corresponding entrances. It was probably built in the last half of the fifth century AD. The church’s preserved mosaic floor, sheltered under a protecting ceiling, has beautiful illustrations. Many of these images lie inside circular medallions and depict animals, birds, humans, vegetable produce, and vessels, as well as personifications of the four seasons, the ocean, earth and wisdom.
This complex of three churches was built over earlier Nabatean buildings and tombs, which remained in the use throughout the Roman period before Christianity became dominant in Petra in the fifth century AD, at which time some buildings and tombs were converted to churches. The carved figures found inside the Petra Church, for example, are Nabatean, suggesting that these may have been recovered from an earlier temple.

An early byzantine church with 84 mosaic medallions, because of the symmetrical figures I think it used to be called "Noahs church ⛪ "
ThePetra Churchis a Byzantine church in the ancient city ofPetra, located a few hundred meters off the colonnaded streetnear the Temple of the Winged Lions.advertisementHistory of the Byzantine ChurchThe Petra Church seems to have first been built over Nabataean and Roman remains around 450 AD. It may have beena major 5th- and 6th-centurycathedral, which is intriguing given the other evidence of Petra's decline after a 363AD earthquake. When first constructed around450, the church had only one apse and anentrance porch. The Mosaic of the Seasons inthe southern aisle is fromthis period. In 500-50 AD, the church was remodeled. Two sideapses were installed and the two-story atrium built. The nave was paved and the chancel screens, a pulpit, and wallmosaicswere installed, as were the mosaics of the northern aisle and the eastern end of the southern aisle.Around 600 AD, a secondremodeling may have been in progress when the church suffered a major fire, and it stood derelict until it was finallydestroyed by earthquakes. The Petra Church was discovered by Kenneth W. Russell in1990, who passed away in 1992. Thesite was excavated in 1992-98 by the American Center of Oriental Research (ACOR) with funding from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).In December 1993,152 papyrus scrollswere uncovered inside the church. The scrolls, which are the largest group of ancient written material found in Jordan, were carbonized due to the early 7th-century fire and are still being deciphered. The scrolls are the records of one extended family and provide a valuable glimpse into life in Petra between 528 and 582 AD, a period that saw the reigns of three Byzantine emperors: Justinian, Justin II and Tiberius II. Among the documents isa will dividing property among three brothers; the property included vineyards and slaves. The scrolls are probably the family archive of the archdeacon Theodorus, son of Obodianos.
The history in this place is amazing. A city that had been around since 300 BC. If the buildings could tell the stories.
Amazing covered floors are found in this church built in around 450 ( amazing! ) :-) I over use that word around here! It was discovered in 1990 and was excavated in 1992-1998. They found 152 papyrus scrolls in the church - the largest ancient written material found in Jordan - and was carbon dated to the 7th C. History!
As the title says this was a Byzantine church. Knowing that is is very crazy because that means Petra was used by many people from different times. It is nice to see how the architecture differed a bit. The main hilight of this sight is the mosaic floors. They are very well kept and a must see to compare the different eras of Petra. This location is a bit hidden and is off the main path, but when you see a white tent as you walk towards the museum that is it.
