The UWIGM, the only museum of its kind in the English speaking Caribbean, has its roots based in a special collection generated merely for the teaching of geology in 1961 with the inception of the then Department of Geology at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus. The UWIGM as a repository for research collections and as a public museum began in 1967 and 1970 respectively. Since then the museum has excelled in terms of the collections it holds as well as the services it offers. The UWIGM is a national treasure. It is situated on the beautiful Mona Campus of the University of the West Indies, although not immediately in the public’s view, being located in the Department of Geography and Geology. In its forty-eight (48) years of existence, significant collections representing the rich scientific heritage of Jamaica and the Caribbean, in the areas of geology and palaeontology, have accumulated and are held in trust by the UWIGM. These collections are significant teaching tools for certain fields such as environmental science and biodiversity.
