A total of 12 United Nations organizations are represented in Jamaica. These include United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), World Health Organization (WHO)/Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO), and International Organization for Migration (IOM), as well as the international financial institution World Bank (WB). There are two non resident agency - the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN WOMEN) and the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC).
We work together as the United Nations Country Team (UNCT) to support the development efforts in Jamaica and several countries in the Caribbean Region. While each organization has programmes and projects in line with its own mandate, the United Nations Country Team ensures that these programmes reinforce each other and provide the most effective aid in a well-coordinated manner. This is achieved by a Common Country Assessment (CCA); the UN's evaluation of the country situation and the resulting United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF). The UNDAF represents a comprehensive guide for development cooperation activities, it is based on the Country's National priorities and needs for development within the context of the Millenium Development Goals (MDGs) and the other international commitments.
