This location was a surprise addition to our itinerary after a discussion with fellow guests at our Amalfi location. They suggested the Caserta as a mid-way break for our drive to Rome and a break from the tourist standards we had planned. My wife and I were blown away with this site. The Palace/museum is on a massively grand scale, well organised and while the path through the museum was packed with people, it flowed perfectly with plenty of photo opportunities. The Palace grounds in front are not overly maintained and give the impression you are heading into a rundown site - we almost turned around and left but the queue out from suggested something might be worth seeing and so we proceeded. The queue moved fast because a number of people had come for the Italian standard 'free first Monday of the month' only to find admission was being charged (Only for the gardens and not much so we went for it). As the gardens close early we chose to tour them first and they are AMAZING - not in terms of flowers, variety, etc but in terms of scale and art work. The grounds are MASSIVE, it is a 3 Km walk from the Palace to the other end of the water feature that runs the length of the park. At several points along the way there are artistic hubs to enjoy. Rather than give away too much I will stop here and just say that, if you want to get away from the usual touristy traps then this is a magnificent, and much more natural, detour on your journey.

A huge royal palace that has probably seen better days. Only a few of the rooms are open to the public and I sometimes wondered if this was because the others aren't in a fit state. There does seem to be some evidence of ongoing conservation, but this doesn't seem to be happening at the pace needed. There is a substantial underground car park, small cafe and a small gift shop, these too seem to be a slightly missed opportunity. The grounds are also spectacular, but again undermaintained, with sections closed off for safety, wild dogs and overgrown plants.

An impresive castle. Full of history and art. The park is also beautiful. 12€ tickets and worth the money.

The building and grounds need a lot of investment to renovate it back to it's original state. If you have Buckingham Palace or Versailles in mind you might be disappointed.
Although unlike Buckingham Palace and Versailles, It was very quiet and it wasn't overcrowded with tourists.
I would also avoid the café - wasn't the best café experience I've had.response / report this review -

Incredible palace and history of the Bourbon kings of Naples. You will enjoy the opulent rooms and extravagance. Unfortunately the gardens were parch dry, dusty and dead when we went, so not much like Versailles to which it's often compared.

This was an amazing Palace! Make sure you have comfortable shoes on and are ready to walk. It is spacious and wonderful. My son took the carriage ride to the gardens, but ended up walking back part of the way. Miss communication with the Italian driver.. They said the gardens were amazing. My husband and I didn't go too tired. Had a expresso in the snack bar and a lay down on the lawn. I would highly recommend this a a visit on your trip to Italia.

OMG, What a castle!!
This blows the Versailles Castle in Paris out of the water.
Beautiful rooms with all the bells and whistles you could possibly expect from a topnotch castle.
Especially the Throne Room is a true masterpiece.
This castle should be way better known than it is. It should be one of the world's wonders.
Count least 3 hours, if you want to see the gardens and the waterfall as well.
It is quite a sight.
It is highly recommendable to take the horse carriage to explore the vast and far-stretching gardens.
It is simply the mother of all castles.
A must when coming to Naples, way more beautiful than Pompeiji.
Unfortunately the gardens are not in such great shape as expected (many areas are not even mowed) and should be enjoying way better upkeep. No quaint cafe for a coffee or a bite to eat.
The French in Versailles do a way better job in maintanance.
Also the restrooms are in bad shape and filthy (NO TOILET PAPER anywhere, yuck).
Cleanliness should not be a virtue!

Wonderful Palace, be sure to walk up the gardens up to the last fountain. Stunning residence. We reached Caserta by car and it wasn't that hard. You can give 1euro to the illegal parking guys to let you park outside the palace. (Never understood what happens if you don't give them a coin).

The Royal Palace of Caserta has a lot of potential to be really called a UNESCO heritage place. However, you pay 12 EUR and the open gardens are not well maintained (vegetation and structures), restrooms are not serviced, there are not even good spots for refreshments inside. The Palace is nice inside, but still not even close to a well maintained palace as Versailles in France.
Signs for parking are not clear and you have to be careful as you can be exposed to fraude by few people that seems to work for the place as parking authorities and ask you for 10EUR parking close to the facilities (one block) and basically it is not allowed, with potential to get a parking ticket on top of that. Even if you report this anomaly to the staff, they say they cannot do anything about it; really?
It is disappointing to see how bad service and lack of vision can turn a beautiful place in a average place to visit. It seems to be the rule in most of the places in Italy.response / report this review -

This morning I've had an example of terrible customer service at the main entrance !
I have been Treated worse than an animal !
Only because I asked why wasn't possibile to enter to jog employees at the main entrance have literally sent me away to the Ministry to ask for queries
Those kind of attitude is typical of people who's got a too much secure job place,they don't need to struggle for it and have no fear of being potentially fired
